What are the three elements of a good hypothesis?

Write a hypothesis for the scientific question:

Do diet pills make people skinny?

Learning Goal

Students will be able to

Use observations and inferences in scientific inquiry.

They accurately ask questions, collect observations, and make inferences about the sides of three patterned cubes. They accurately write IF and THEN hypotheses which predict labels for blank sides of cubes.

Students will be successful when

Inquiry Cubes

You can work with the students at your table but everyone fills out and hands in an activity sheet. Complete the pre-lab questions. Pick up your 3 different colored cubes. Each cube has a missing side. Make observations:

What is the connection between the numbers/symbols on each cube? Are they arranged in a particular way? What patterns do you see? What could be on the blank side? What is your evidence for your prediction? Is there no other possibility? Sentence starters: The evidence suggests that We can predict with some confidence that . The prediction that is most strongly supported by evidence is .

Make inferences about each cube:

Form your inference into a hypothesis using the ifthen format. Chose the best hypothesis from your group and write them on chart paper. Complete the post lab questions

Inquiry Results: What did you find??

Yellow Cube # 1

Orange Cube # 2

Blue Cube # 3

How

did we act as scientists today? How were we involved in inquiry?
