Comparison of WOU Instructional Design Certificate and UO Online Learning Certificate

Differences:
WOU has one focus area: designing effective technology-rich instruction for online environments or for face-to-face learning. UO offers two different focus areas: one on developing expertise in online learning and virtual school leadership; one on developing online practices for use within a physical space. The WOU certificate requires completion of specific coursework. Only those earning the full masters degree complete electronic portfolios or other proficiency-based exit requirements. UO requires a final electronic portfolio. The WOU program allows rolling enrollment so that students can take courses on a schedule that works with their careers. We anticipate awarding an average of 10 certificates per year. UO is cohort based and anticipates an enrollment of 4-6 students. The WOU program will have a broad population base. While we currently have a large number of K12 teachers in the masters program, some of whom may choose to complete the certificate, we are also specifically targeting educational professionals in public agencies, private business, and informal learning environments. UO is targeting a population of licensed teachers or K12 administrators with teaching experience. The WOU online ID certificate can be embedded in the MSEd Information Technology degree program, which can be completed fully online. This allows us to enroll students at a distance without requiring travel to campus. The UO Online Learning certificate can be embedded in an Educational Leadership masters degree, which has a residency requirement of three terms on campus.

Similarities:
Both programs can be completed online Both certificates include 24 credits Both can be embedded in a Masters of Science in Education program Both programs will include licensed teachers in their student population
