1. a) Compute formally that 4 =4 = , z z z z where (x, y) = xx (x, y) + yy (x, y). b) Show that if f is holomorphic, then |f(z)|2 = 4|fz (z)|2 . c) Prove that if f = u + iv is holomorphic then |f (z)|2 = det ux vx . uy vy

2. Let f be holomorphic in an open connected set . Consider g(x, y) = |f(x + iy)|2 , x + iy . Show that if g is harmonic in then f is a constant function. 3. Show that the function z |z|2 is differentiable only at 0. 4. Consider the function dened by f(x + iy) = |x||y|, x, y R. Show that f satises the Cauchy-Riemann equations at the origin, yet f is not holomorphic at 0. 5. Harmonic conjugates: Show that the following functions u are harmonic and nd their corresponding harmonic conjugate v and holomorphic f = u + iv: a) u(x, y) = x3 3xy2 2y. b) u(x, y) = x xy.
