Year 6 Music Scheme 2013- 2014 August/September Revision of key signatures up to 4#s an 4 bs, notes, clefs.

. Melody writing- Students revise melody writing rules and focus on modulation in the major key. Students recap on building a sequence and on cadences. Students learn to add in dynamics and articulation. Students will study further musical terms and their meanings. Through various genres of music students will analyze elements of music such as tempo, features, rhythm, dynamics, expression and articulation. Students will actively listen to excerpts of music and describe them using musical terms. Students will study the Irish song tradition including sean-ns and write exam style essay questions. Students will be assigned a suitable piece of an appropriate standard to learn for their practical exam by the teacher. Students will revise inputting music using Finale and also making three edits Revise- un bal from Symphonie Fantastique Begin Marche au Supplice from Symphonie Fantastique; examine the romantic period, Berlioz style of composition, compare and contrast movements. General aural skills and exam style questions including dictation and score-reading will be done. Begin Mozart Piano Concerto in A Major K488- Examination of Mozarts style, the piano concerto form and features. Aural skills, dictation and general listening skills will be developed further. Students work on harmony question involving chord progressions, passing notes, auxiliary notes, cadences and chord structure including inversions Ib, Vb. IVb, iib and V7. Irish music- Revision of instruments and regional styles including listening exercises identifying

them. Practical performance to continue on both individual and group basis. Practical performance tests such as sight reading, aural memory rhythm and aural memory melody are practiced. November Minor keys will be covered in relation to their relative majors. Students will be confident in writing scales in the minor key. Treatment of an upbeat melody as well as 6/8 time will be covered. Students will be confident in answering leaving cert melodies using these key features. Revision of The Beatles including form, style, recording techniques and features. Aural skills questions from past papers and dictation and backing chord style questions. Irish music Irish dances, The Song tradition and general characteristics of Irish music. The Composers of Irish music will be researched in detail. Practical performance to continue on both individual and group basis. Practical performance to continue on both individual and group basis. Begin- Seachanges- Deane, examine Deanes style, 20th Century compositional features, instrumentation and effects. Practice aural skills and exam-style questions from past papers. Continue to work on exam style questions for Berlioz, Mozart and The Beatles including listening exercises, identification of compositional techniques, dictation and identification and explanation of features. Irish Music- Fusion, changes within and without Irish music and the cili band. Listening and essay style questions as well as investigating and research.

Students will continue to listen to Irish music and identify features, musical idioms, traditional and modern-day performing styles and evaluate performance. Students will study Irish bands and performers Treatment of the minor melody will be looked at in detail. Students will learn how to compose a 16 bar melody in the minor key. As modulation is not necessary students will focus on the melody line, cadences, sequences, developing the given material and dynamics and articulation. Students will focus on listening and identifying cadences in chosen excerpts. Irish Music- revision of the influence of Irish music on other traditions such as North America. Focus on mock exams and revision Correction of mock exam questions in class for assessment for learning and focus on marking scheme, definitions in answers and phrasing of questions/answers. Harmony Examination of treatment of harmony questions in the minor key using chords i, V, iv and VI including inversions ib, Vb, ivb, and iib Music technology practice Practical work Unprepared tests Irish Music- revision of harping tradition, Belfast Harp Festival and Turlough O Carolan Focus on practical Performance of practical pieces. Music Technology- practice increased speed and accuracy when inputting music. Practice making at least three edits to each piece of music. Students will name and perform each edit and practice saving and retrieving their document. Revision of Symphonie Fantastique Listening, dictation, naming features, performing themes, comparing and contrasting sections, examining Tchaikovskys style and romanticism in relation to the piece.
