Atorvastatin calcium is a synthetic, selective lipidlowering agent, competitive inhibitor of HMGCoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme responsible for the conversion of 3-hydroxy-3methyl-glutarylco-enzyme A to mevalonate, a precursor of sterols, including cholesterol.

Should be stopped 5-7 days prior to surgery. Nausea, diarrhea, dyspepsia & flatulence, myalgia. Hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, anorexia. Thrombocytopenia, tendon rupture, wt gain, hypoesthesia, amnesia, dizziness, dysguesia, StevensJohnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, erythema multiforme, bullous rashes, urticaria, rhabdomyolysis, back & chest pain, peripheral edema, malaise & fatigue.
