Heat Transfer- Exam II Name_____________________ April 27,2005 10:10 11:10 a.m

I(i) Oil is used to heat the water from 20 to 80 C. The oil enters at 100C and exits at 70C. The convective heat transfer coefficient between the oil and the pipe through which it is flowing is hi=50 W/m2K. The ho on the waterside is 1000 W/m2K. Given a choice between increasing hi or ho , which one will you choose to effectively increase the rate of heat transfer between the two fluids and why? Also suggest how you would increase h (10%)

I(ii). If you want to cool a thin plate by natural convection quickly, will you hold it as shown in position (a) with the long dimension parallel to the direction of gravity or in position (b) with the shorter dimension parallel to the direction of gravity and why ?Assume Laminar flow (15%)

II Thin strip heaters, 10-mm long and 50-cm wide, are placed on a 50-cm wide flat plate. The heaters are placed such that there is no space between two adjacent heaters and the top surface of the elements form a smooth surface. Each strip is electrically and thermally insulated from its neighboring strips. Air at 20C flows over the plate with a free stream velocity of 10 m/s. By controlling the power input to each of the elements, the surfaces of strips are maintained at a uniform temperature of 80C. Determine the heat transfer rate from strip number 1 and 5 from the leading edge. 40% Heating elements 10 mm

UCARTHERM is a special heat transfer fluid that is manufactured by Union Carbide. A 50% mixture of the fluid with water enters a 1-cm diameter, 10-m long tube at 10C with a velocity of 3 m/s. The tube surface is at 90C. Determine the outlet temperature of the fluid and the heat transfer rate. 35% Properties of the liquid are Density 1060 kg/m3 Specific heat 3600 J/kg C Thermal conductivity 0.406 W/m C Viscosity 0.0012 N s/m2 Ts= 90C Ti=10C V=3 m/s
