Glimpses of World history by Jawaharlal Nehru A book that goes deep into Indian culture, freedom movements and

d is packed with history. A book, which is a cluster of letters that a father writes to his beloved daughter. That father being none other that Jawaharlal Nehru, the book Glimpses of World History. In 1931, Nehru began writing a series of letters to his daughter, then 13 year old Indira Priyadarshini. Over the next two and half years, he wrote about two hundred letters in this series which was later published as Glimpses of World History. With its panoramic sweep and gripping narrative, it becomes all the more remarkable. The letters were written from prison, where Nehru had no resource to reference books or a library. Nehru writes about many cultures in detail as he himself said, he couldnt like the way history was taught in schools as it was confined to a single country and that too narrow. So, he wanted his daughter Priyadarshini, to know why people did and what they did. The book covers the rise and fall of empires and civilizations, from Greece, Rome to Chine, West Asia and also many eminent personalities like Ashoka and Chengiz Khan, Gandhi and Lenin; all of these features in one book. This book remains an essential reading material for anyone, who wants to know the personalities and ideas behind the shaping of India, through ages. It also shows the love of a father, who has to put up with the separation of prison. Later, Indira Gandhi, who followed his books and ideals, proved to be a true leader like her father. I hope, I have given everyone a good reason to read this book. It surely is a literary delight. Enjoy! Thank you. Sreelakshmi Suraj
