HISTORY OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

Engineering has been an aspect of life since the beginnings of human existence. The earliest Civil engineering may have expected to be practised between 4000 and 2000 BC in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia (Ancient Iraq) when humans started to abandon a nomadic existence, thus causing a need for the construction of shelter.

The construction of Pyramids in Egypt (circa 27002500 BC) might be considered the first instances of large structure constructions.

Other ancient historic civil engineering constructions include the Parthenon by Ictinus in Ancient Greece (447-438 BC), the Appian Way by Roman engineers (c. 312 BC), The Romans developed civil structures throughout their empire.

ORIGIN OF TERM CIVIL ENGINEERING

In the 18th century, the term civil engineering was coined to incorporate all things civilian as opposed to military engineering.

In 1818 the Institution of Civil Engineers was founded in London, and in 1820 the eminent engineer Thomas Telford became its first president. The institution received a Royal Charter in 1828, formally recognizing civil engineering as a profession.

The first private college to teach Civil Engineering in the United States was Norwich University founded in 1819 by Captain Alden Partridge.[9]. The first degree in Civil Engineering in the United States was awarded by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1835.

The main important disciplines of civil eng;

CONSTRUCTURAL ENGINEERING STRUCTIONAL ENGINEERING GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING TRANSPORTATIONAL ENGINEERING

Construction engineering concerns the planning and management of construction of structures such as highways, bridges, airports, railroads, buildings, dams, and reservoirs.

Structural engineering is a field of civil engineering, that deals with design of structures that support or resist loads.

Geotechnical engineering is the branch of civil engineering concerned with the engineering behaviour of earth materialS. they just deals with the mechanical and chemical properties of materials such as their strenth, stability, their slopes and validity, olso the effect of environment on it etc and manages how suitable materials, suits suitable occasions.

ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

Environmental engineering involves waste water management and air pollution control, recycling, waste disposal, radiation protection, industrial hygiene, environmental sustainability, and public health issues as well as a knowledge of environmental engineering law. It also includes studies on the environmental impact of proposed construction projects.

is the planning, functional design, operation and management of facilities for any mode of transportation in order to provide for the safe, rapid, comfortable, convenient, economical, and environmentally compatible movement of people and goods (transport).

IT MAY INCLUDE THE STRUCTURAL AND CONSTRUCTIONAL MANAGEMENT OF AIRPORTS ..!
