Background, diabetic retinopathy is a common microangiopathy complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Oxidative stress is said to be one of the pathophysiological causes of microangiopathy complications of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Serum gamma glutamyl tarnsferase is being considered an early marker of oxidative stress. The aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between diabetic retinopathy and serum gamma glutamyl transferase levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. Methods, we conducted cross sectional study to 80 patients. Inclusion criteria was type 2 diabetes mellitus. Exclusion criteria were smoking, alcoholics, hepatitis, elevated transaminase enzim, elevated total bilirubin, history of coronary heart disease or symptomatic carotid artery disease. We analized with spearman correlation for association serum gamma glutamyl transferase and diabetic retinopathy, with significant p 0,05 Result, There were 48 females and 32 males samples with mean age 52,98 5,17 years old, 50 samples with diabetic retinopathy and 30 without retinopathy, mean serum gamma glutamyl transferase was 54,21 15,83 IU/l. There was association between serum gamma glutamyl transferase and diabetic retinopathy, r = 0,470 (p = 0,03). Conclusion, this study shows that elevated serum gamma glutamyl transferase are associated with diabetic retinopathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus patient. Keywords : gamma glutamyl transferase, type 2 diabetes mellitus, retinopathy
