Associated Engineering Ltd. c/o UBC Engineering Co-op Office

Dear Sir/Madam: Re: Wastewater Coop As one of Canadas best managed companies, the opportunity to be a part of Associated Engineering is very appealing; I am extremely interested gaining experience in field work, and as a third-year UBC mechanical engineering student, I believe that I have the skills and experience required by your team to be a suitable candidate for this co-op position. To meet the demands of the job, I will be bringing over the skills that I have obtained from my work terms at Vector Aerospace and Kensington Computer Products. At Vector Aerospace, I designed test cell instrumentation and generated many 2D engineering drawings using AutoCAD for manufacturing; as well, I improved my communication skills by interacting with people, ranging from machinists to purchasers, on a daily basis, and I was exposed to Lean and 5S on the shop floor. Moreover, I used MS Excel heavily to analyze data that was then presented to my superiors. My time there also taught me the importance of taking initiative, as progress on a project that I was assisting on had slowed until I pushed it forward. At Kensington, I familiarized myself with Solidworks by modeling test jigs in 3D; I also handled the design and build of a test stand that involved the use of sleeve bearings. Other test jigs I built, using hand tools, utilized ball bearings and optical instruments. After each set of tests, I would generate high-level test reports or PowerPoint presentations that summarized my findings. And through my participation in the UBC Supermileage club, I have learned how to work in a team, and my cumulative GPA shows that I am keen on learning theory as well. Though my experience with field work is limited, I know that if I am a part Associated Engineering, I will put in my best effort to ensure that I meet your expectations. Thank you for taking the time to read through my application. If you wish to arrange for an interview, please contact the Co-op Office at 604.822.6995 or coop.interviews@ubc.ca Sincerely, Kai Hsieh Encl. Resum, transcript.
