STANDARDISATION OF SODIUM THIOSULFATE SOLUTION A known volume of standard potassium iodate can be reacted with excess of acidified potassium

iodide to produce yellow iodine. IO3 + 5I + 6H+ 3H2O + 3I2 The iodine produced is then titrated against the thiosulfate solution and the concentration of sodium thiosulfate may be determined. I2 + 2S2O32 2I + S4O62 Materials: burette, pipette, conical flasks, wash bottle, measuring cylinder, volumetric flask, 0.2 molL -1 potassium iodide and solid potassium iodate, sodium thiosulfate solution(about 0.1 mol L1), 1 mol L1 sulfuric acid, fresh starch solution. Method: 1. Accurately weigh out 0.8 - 0.9 g of potassium iodate. Record the mass below. 1. Dissolve this in about 100mL of water and transfer all the solution to a 250mL volumetric flask. Make up to the mark and ensure the solution is thoroughly mixed. 3. Pipette 25 mL of the potassium iodate solution into a conical flask. 4. Add 10 mL of 10 % potassium iodide and 15 mL of dilute sulfuric acid to the conical flask. 5. Titrate the liberated iodine with sodium thiosulfate solution from a burette until a faint yellow colour is reached. 5. Add a few drops of starch solution and continue the titration until the blue-black colour of the starch - iodine complex just disappears. 7. Repeat steps 3-6 until concordant results are obtained. Enter the results in the table below. Results: Name the primary standard used ____________________________ Formula: _______________ M = ______________
