At research universities in the US, the PhD is not intended for preparing people to go into teaching careers.

The purpose of a PhD is to prepare the individual for a career in research i.e. creating knowledge. Although many apply to PhD program with a desire to become a teacher, the admiss ions committee usually tries to sift through these applicants.
