Special Events Plan

• Event: The School of Journalism and Mass Communication’s Public


Relations Sequence Celebrates Student Internships with Internship Speed
Dating Event

• Background: Internships are a fundamental part of the education students


receive in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. It is
important to increase awareness about interning because it is a great way
to network with companies for future job opportunities.

• Purpose: Students who have interned will have the opportunity to tell
other students about their experience. Students who have not interned
will have the opportunity to listen to other students’ experiences and learn
from them.

• Date: TBD – sometime in the Fall 2009 semester

• Time: 6 – 8 p.m. on a weekday

• Location: Carroll Hall (reserve room)

• Participants: 20 students – 10 who have interned and 10 who have not


interned. All students in the PR sequence will receive an email invitation
and will be asked to RSVP in a timely fashion to reserve their spot.

• Agenda:
-Meet & Greet with hors d’oeuvres (10 – 15 minutes)
-Introductions/Guest Speaker(s) (10 – 15 minutes, depending on how
many speakers will be present)
-“Dating:” 5 minute one-on-one conversations in a rotational style (50
minutes)
-Closing remarks: Thank you’s, hope you learned something
valuable/helpful in your endeavors, tag line about internships (5-10
minutes)
-Adjourn

• Refreshments: Hors d’oeuvres provided (maybe by a Franklin St.


restaurant?)

• Guest Speakers: Dr. Lois Boynton and Mr. Jay Eubank

• Other/Notes:
-Draft speakers’ remarks for welcome and closing as appropriate
-Coordinate event with Dr. Boynton and Prof. Queenie Byars
