Template for argument analysis

Present your analysis on two slides. The first slide must contain only the following information: (a) The arguments main conclusion (b) The premises for this conclusion (c) The main argument - consisting of (a) and (b) If the premises are argued for, then write down the sub-arguments on the second slide. For example, suppose you are analyzing the argument below: Concern about the effects of chemicals upon the environment has led to calls for more research. But we should not wait for further research before we ban some of the chemicals used by industry. If anyone has a good reason to think something is harmful, it should not be used until or unless the risk has been fully assessed and the results published, whatever the cost. We know enough about past mistakes to be forewarned. Much of the harm to wildlife and humans is long-term, and the disturbing results we see today reflect the chemical environment of up to 40 years ago. Thousands more chemicals have been released into the environment since then. Then your main slide will look like this:

The main conclusion of this argument is: Certain industrial chemicals should be banned immediately The premises for this conclusion are: If someone has a good reason to think that something is harmful, then it should be banned until the risk has been fully assessed The sub-argument for premise 1 is: There are concerns about the effects of some industrial chemicals on the environment. 4. Unregulated use of industrial chemicals in the past has resulted in serious and long-term harm to wildlife and humans. The main argument 5. We should is: do what is necessary to prevent similar harms from occurring in the future. 1.6.
