What is Erosion?

Erosion is the process of the removal or transportation of weathered materials such as soils or rocks which have been worn away from the earths surface. Erosion is caused by wind, water and other natural phenomena; high tides, floods, temperature. Erosion dramatically changes the shape of the land; like a landslide or avalanche

Temporary SeedingTemporary seeding can be used to stabilize disturbed areas that will be inactive for an extended period. Permanent seeding should be used to stabilize areas that will not be otherwise stabilized.

A sediment basin is a temporary pond built on a construction site to capture eroded or disturbed soil that is washed off during rain storms, and protect the water quality of a nearby stream, river, lake, or bay. This is being used on Curtis Island and on other industrial sites being built around Gladstone

Hydro-mulchingHydro-mulching or Hydro-seeding is the application of seed, mulch, fertiliser, tackifier (sticking agent) and water to form a wet mixture called a slurry. These ingredients are combined and then pumped onto exposed soil.

Strategies to prevent erosion around YOUR house:

Retaining native trees, shrubs and grasses on a site that is being developed can greatly reduce future erosion damage. Minimize tillage and irrigation are preferred during agricultural practices Build trails that are set back from the edge of streams; like lookouts, boardwalks and wildlife viewing areas. Bioengineering techniques can be used to control erosion; living fences, made from vegetation such as willow, help stabilize slopes, first with the structure of the fence and subsequently with growing plant roots.
