1. Quicklime is produced from limestone in a rotating kiln.

Limestone
Coal dust is
blown into
the kiln where
it ignites

Limestone is added at the top of the kiln. Turning the kiln lets the limestone moves
slowly downwards as it is heated. Quicklime is formed and is taken from the bottom of the kiln.
a) Give the chemical name for:
(2)
(i)

Quicklime -------------------------------------------

(ii)

Limestone -------------------------------------------

b) State whether this reaction is exothermic or endothermic.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (1)
c) Some students investigated this reaction. They heated a piece of limestone on the
edge of a gauze. Describe what they would see.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(2)

d) Some limestone comes from a quarry in a National Park. This quarry is to be extended.
(i)

Give one problem that may be caused by extending the quarry.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(ii)

(1)

Suggest one way in which the area may benefit from extending the quarry.
