The triangle represents the three representations of numbers. At an early stage of counting, a child will simply try and repeat the number words. In early schooling, the student moves to learning the real meaning behind the numbers, and then to learning the symbols that relate. Activities showing the relationship between the representations will be more beneficial than activities that reflect one representation only. [Adopted from Booker et al., 2000].
