Joe Dassin (1938 - 1980), son of French actor Jules Dassin, was raised and educated in

the United States, earning a Ph.D. in ethnology. He began performing in America, and then took his brand of music to France. His deep voice, exotic American origins, and repertoire of American folk and country songs made him one of the most popular figures in French music.
