SUMMARY
Presurgical and postsurgical prosthetic appliances in the cleft
palate patient

Artopoulou I., Angelopoulou M., Nassika M.

Despite the significant progress that plastic surgery has
made in the area of cleft palate surgery, surgical repair alone
cannot rehabilitate the multiple problems experienced by
patients with cleft palate. The treatment goals for repair of a
cleft palate defect surgically or prosthetically are to restore the
barrier between the oral and nasal cavities and to rehabilitate
the velopharyngeal function. This article provides a brief
overview of the classification and the indications of palatal
prostheses used in cleft patients, and a description of a
treatment algorithm that can be used to determine their preand postsurgical use.
