Guilianna Giovinozzo 9/29/2013 World Literature 8-9 Life of Pie Summary The Life of Pi takes its readers on an unbelievable

journey of a young boy stranded at sea with one unlikely companion who turns out to be a tiger. Pi lives at sea for 221, days he endures starvation, blindness, the suffering of losing his family, the fear of death and no idea of knowing if or when he will ever see land again. After 7 months on the boat with Richard Parker the tiger, Pi finds land and tells the story of his adventure to the two men that he has found after being saved. Character Descriptions Pi: Intelligent, faithful, brave, mature, open minded Richard Parker: Fierce, protective, dangerous, distant Santosh: Wise, careful, informative, concerned Gita: Loving, caring, encouraging, kind Discussion Questions 1. Why does Pi decide to follow the faith of 3 religions instead of being forced to only choose one and how does this contradict the beliefs of separate religions? 2. In what ways could Richard Parker symbolize god? 3. In what ways does the algae island symbolize that Pi still has faith in being saved? Key Passage Chapter 56, Page 155 I must say a word about fear. It is life's only true opponent. Only fear can defeat life. It is a clever, treacherous adversary, how well I know. It has no decency, respects no law or convention, shows no mercy. It goes for your weakest spot, which it finds with unnerving ease. It begins in your mind, always... so you must fight hard to express it. You must fight hard to shine the light of words upon it. Because if you don't, if your fear becomes a wordless darkness that you avoid, perhaps even manage to forget, you open yourself to further attacks of fear because you never truly fought the opponent who defeated you.

Key Passage Explanation I chose this because throughout the whole book Pi is faced with challenges that would usually result in the feeling of fear. The fear of worrying about believing in three different religions at once, the fear of trying to stand up for himself in school when it comes to his name, and most of all the fear of knowing he could die any day. Pi, stranded with a tiger, growing up with no family, being alone in a new country, is faced with fear all throughout the story. Pi faces all these things but gets threw them all because thats what he knows he has to do to overcome it all.
