ELED 440: K-8 Language Arts Methods

Field Experience
I went into the classroom and carried out lesson plans with 4th grade students at Madison elementary. I was teaching cooperatively with three other teachers. We spent a total of seven hours in the classroom. I taught reading to kindergartners at St. Thomas Moore in Madison. I engaged students in activities that dealt with both reading and writing. Students performed readers theatre, and completed centers. I spent a total of 10 hours in the Kindergarten classroom. Administered DIBELS to 1st grade students at St. Thomas Moore and administered BADER to 4th grade students at Madison elementary. I planned and carried out lessons in South Dakota History with a small group of 4th students while working on students specific reading needs such as comprehension and fluency. I spent a total of ten hours in the classroom. I observed in two different 1st grade classrooms. One was the school that I graduated from (as recommended by professor) and the other was a very low-income class in my college town. I observed for 20 total hours between the two classrooms. I observed a student who was being considered for an IEP in a pre-kindergarten setting. I took notes and made recommendations for ways to work with the child. I spent a total of 12 hours observing the child. Myself and a partner worked with an individual from ECCO. We did a file evaluation and choose a skill to work on with our client. We spent an hour a week working with the client on cooking skills. We started by giving a lot of guidance and overtime encouraged her to read and follow recipes on her own.
