A shape is a 2 dimensional area with a recognizable boundary

The FIGURE is the part of the image that stands out. It appears to be on top of the ground. The GROUND is the part of the image that appears to be underneath or surrounding the figure. (Think of backGROUND)

Sometimes Figure and Ground Are Reversible.

Organic Shapes are shapes that are found in nature. They tend to be irregular. They may have somewhat straight lines, but never perfectly straight.

Geometric Shapes are typically found in things made by people.

Henri Matisse is a famous painter that was a friend and competitor with Pablo Picasso.

In 1941, Henri Matisse was diagnosed with cancer and following surgery he had to use a wheelchair.

Matisse then began using scissors and paper to make giant artworks.
