This poem describes a person standing at the edge of the great ocean of samsara, or cyclic existence in Buddhism, having learned about the Four Noble Truths. The person reflects on taking responsibility for their own choices by following the Noble Eightfold Path one step at a time, without rushing ahead. Facing change, they focus on the present moment and renounce attachments of the past or future. With faith and clear intentions, they commit to swimming through the ocean of samsara one stroke at a time until enlightenment is reached and the ocean is no longer needed, guided by the buoyancy of the Buddha's teachings.

I stand on the edge of the great ocean of samsara having discovered the shore in the Four Noble Truths As i reflect on my part in the choices I make i see the next step to take is all of my own The ocean of life spans forever before me beyond my sight to a point I cannot see i think of the Noble 8-fold path and allow for my potential, the buoyancy of wisdom, of the others who have gone before me Hesitating for a moment and dipping a toe, the shudder of change goes through me I let go of the past and focus on this moment - moment by moment leaving past moments, leaving future moments in a state of renunciation i move forward Diving into the Dharma, the truth and observing it flow through and around One devoted stroke at a time i swim the Great Ocean of Samsara freely without attachments to sink me and with clear intentions i know i only need swim with faith until there is no longer a need to; for the buoyancy of the Buddha requires no ocean. With metta for all sentient beings.. Dedicated to all our Dharma teachers By Paul Hammond
