Tell me about a time when you had difficulty completing an assignment on time. What did you do to manage the situation and what was the result? I was responsible for leading a global team to develop a new software product under a very tight time constraint. The product was scheduled for beta release to a client, and the client kept adding additional features and functionality as the development progressed. The team was able to meet the deadline by setting specific checkpoints during each local shift to minimize downtime. What was your specific role in managing the schedule conflict? As the team lead I assigned responsibilities for each days coordination including who from the US team would make decisions during the US evening checkpoint and requiring an offshore team member to be available during the US morning checkpoint. So the time difference with a global team was a problem Yes. But the ongoing client requests for new features was also a problem. I negotiated with the client to defer some requested features to a subsequent version of the software. What was the result of your efforts? The team was able to deliver the software on schedule with all of the functionality in the original requirements document, and some of the requested additions. The client was satisfied. That was an accomplishment Yes.The account representative however did not understand why all of the client requests had not been included. Is there anything you would do differently based on what you learned from that project? One of my takeaways is the importance of establishing upfront a freeze date on any changes in requirements. That would have helped me manage the expectations of the client and the account representative.
