Solution

Question A particular wire has a resistance of 40 ohms. Suppose that both the length and the diameter of the wire are doubled at the same time. What is the new resistance of the wire? Answer

10 ohms 80 ohms 40 ohms 20 ohms

Solution
Remember the resistance of a wire is directly proportional to the length and inversely proportional to the surface area. When the length is doubled, the resistance is doubled. However, when the diameter is doubled, the surface area is quadrupled (pi*r2) so the resistance is reduced to 1/4th so the new resistance will be half the original resistance.

Question For the following circuit diagram, find the value of is.

Answer

2A 4A 8A 10A

If the voltage difference across the 15 ohm resistor is 30V, then we can easily find ix, ix = V / R = 30/15 = 2A (it is (+) due to passive sign convention as it enters the 15 ohm resistance from the (+) 30V terminal). From KCL , is + ix = 5ix => is = 5ix ix = 4ix = 4 * 2 =8A.
