Fun Ability Test
This is a fun teaching activity for students to learn about the modal verbs of ability can and could. Students try out entertaining challenges in teams and fill in a chart to show what members of the team can and cant do. Before class, make one copy of the worksheet for each group of three students. Procedure Divide the class into groups of three and give each group one copy of the worksheet. Ask the three members of each group to write their names next to the first challenge on the worksheet. In their groups, the students take it in turns to try out the challenge and then tick the 'can or cant column next to their name according to whether they completed the task successfully or not. The students repeat the procedure for all challenges in their groups and complete the chart. When the groups have completed all the challenges, ask the students to write a summary of what they could and couldnt do. After they have completed the summary, have the students take it in turns to tell the class one thing they could do and one thing they couldnt do.
