3rd Grade Reading Lesson Lesson 1: What is an Author Study?

Objectives: Students will be able to explain and understand why it is important to study different authors. Common Core Standards: RL.3.9. Compare and contrast the themes, settings, and plots of stories written by the same author about the same or similar characters (e.g., in books from a series). SL.3.1. Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-onone, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 3 topics and texts, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly. Materials: Author Study Interest Sheets SmartBoard Lesson Reading Group Graphic Organizers and Article Cards Procedure: 1. Anticipatory Set: I will explain to students that we are going to begin our Author Study Unit. I will start off by showing students an example of an author study poster they will complete at the end of this unit. 2. Teaching Input: I will explain that in this unit, students will explore and discover authors and their craft. Students will make connections to the author and see how authors experiences and cultural backgrounds can influence their stories. I will also explain that students will build onto what they have learned in their partnership unit. I will ask students. Why do you think it is important for us to study different authors? 3. Active Engagement: I will show students examples of books that we have read together in class. I will ask students to turn and talk to their reading partner about authors that they are familiar with and what they like and dislike about they authors that they have read. I will pull popsicle sticks to call on groups to share. 4. Modeling: I will show students the Author Study Interest Sheet and model how they should fill out their interest sheet. I will explain that

their Author Study Interest Sheet will help narrow down a just right author for them. I will next explain to students that their IDR task is to fill out their Author Study Interest Survey and turn it in when they are finished. I will also inform students that we are going to be getting back into reading groups and will begin them again today. Checking for Understand: I will ask students: Why are we studying different authors? What is your IDR task for today? I will meet with the yellow and green reading groups. I will conference will individual students. Closing: I will have students share what they put on their Author Study Interest Sheet.
