In her article, Alper examines digital and non-digital media use among preschoolers using three of twelve New Media Literacy skills. She focuses on play, distributed cognition, and transmedia navigation; she studies the development of these skills within a Reggio Emilia teaching environment.

As I read this article, I became interested in the findings of this authors study. The results seem to corroborate the National Association of Early Childhood Educations (NAEYC) position on technology in early childhood classrooms. Use of media and technology by young children should not restrict nor replace peer social and imaginative play interaction. Media and technology use can be effective tools for problem -solving and an extension of self expression. I am interested in learning how a preschoolers technology use affects literacy development, how much and what kind of technology use is taking place in a preschoolers home.
