1) Neologism The person may make up words that mean something only to him or her. Such as, (1) words referring to new objects or phenomena, for example klimacertifikat (climate certificate); (2) new words replacing old ones, for example sort for neger (black replacing for negro); (3) semantic expansion of existing words, for example blaeksprutte (octopus) in the sense altumiligmand (odd job man); 2) Word Salad Speech A person with schizophrenia may answer questions with barely related or unrelated comments. For example, when asked why he is in the hospital, a schizophrenic might answer, Spaghetti looks like worms. I really think its worms. Gophers dig tunnels but rats build nests. 3) Circumstantiality It is very common in manic clients or even obsessive-compulsive clients. For example, the interviewer asks, When did your panic attacks begin? The client would say, Just thinking about them scares me. I remember my wife telling me a ong time ago I shouldnt be so afraid. When we first got married I remembered she called me fearless because I would try anything. I never was afraid. In fact, I remember going skydiving one year and I wasnt phased a bit. My friends kidded me that I was crazy for doing it. Panic I never felt panic. I did have a good friend who was pretty nervous. He and I would pal around together and I would reassure him about his stress. But me, never! That is until about 3 years ago when my father died. Thats when the attacks began. 4) Tangentiality It is common in anxious and obsessive-compulsive clients but is most indicative of manic disorders. For example, the interviewer would ask, What city are you from? The patient would say, Well, thats a hard question to answer because my parentsI was born in lowa, but I know that Im white instead of black so apparently I came from the North somewhere and I dont know where you know. I really dont know where my ancestors came from. So I dont know whether Im Irish or French or Scandinavian or I dont believe Im Polish but I think Im I think I can be German or Welsh. Im not but thats all speculation and that thats one thing that I would like to know and is my ancestors you know where did I originate? But I never took the time to find out the answer to that question.
