Shalstab - Shallow Slope Stability Model ArcView Extension written by Tim Schaub Based on Model by Dave Montgomery &

Bill Dietrich For details on the model, see... Montgomery, D.R., and W.E. Dietrich, 1994. A physically-based model for the top ographic control on shallow landsliding. Water Resources Research. 30:1153-117 1. To use the extension... - Extract shalstab.dll to your AVBIN directory (C:\ESRI\AV_GIS30\ARCVIEW\BIN32) - Extract shalstab.avx to your AVEXT directory (C:\ESRI\AV_GIS30\ARCVIEW\EXT32) Requires Spatial Analyst This version of the model takes several soil and topographic input parameters. Soil parameters include cohesion, density, depth, hydraulic conductivity, and in ternal friction angle. Each of these parameters can be entered as a constant, or a grid can be specifie d for variable input. Topographic parameters include terrain slope and accumulation area. Each of these can be calculated from the DEM with functions on the Shalstab menu . ** The accumulation area calculation uses a different method than the standard A rcView method. The ArcView method is calculates accumulation areas based on flow from each cell in the DEM to just one adjacent cell. The method I've used here allows for diffuse flow into all downslope neighbors. The function calls a procedure from the included DLL which can take some time fo r large grids. During the accumulation area calculation, the ArcView window is minimized and a wait window appears. ArcView will be restored when the calculation is complete. The model calculates critical steady-state rainfall as a measure of relative slo pe stability.
