Physics 2212 Spring 2010 Lab 12, Quiz 7 Name: KEY Section

Show all work clearly and in order, and box your nal answers. By writing your name on this quiz you agree that this quiz was taken in accordance with the Georgia Tech Honor Code. In the gure below, on the left is a region of uniform magnetic eld B1 into the page and adjacent on the right is a region of uniform magnetic eld B2 also into the page (B2 < B1 ). You pull a rectangular loop of wire of length w, height h and resistance R from the rst region into the second region on a frictionless surface. While you do this you apply a constant force F to the right and notice that the loop moves with a constant speed v . Some equations from the formula sheet you may nd useful: dp = Fnet dt F = I l B V = i E dl (Ex x + Ey y + Ez z ) |V | I= (ohmic resistor) R

1.

(20 points ) Show the approximate surface-charge distribution on the loop.

2.

(40 points ) Calculate the conventional current in the loop in terms of the variables given in the problem statement.

In the left wire positive carriers are pushed upward by the magnetic force qvB1 , and the emf generated in the left wire is the electric eld in that part of the wire times the length h of wire. In steady state the net force on a mobile charge in the wire is zero so that E1 = vB1 . Hence in the left wire there is upward motional vB1 h. Similarly, in the right wire there is a smaller upward motional emf vB2 h. The net emf vB1 h vB2 h drives a current I clockwise around the loop. emf = (B1 B2 )vh I= (B1 B2 )vh emf = R R

3.

(40 points ) Calculate the constant speed of the loop in terms of the variables given in the problem statement. The current-carrying wires experience magnetic forces. The magnetic forces on the horizontal segments are equal and opposite, but the magnetic force IhB2 (to the right) on the right end is smaller than the magnetic force IhB1 (to the left) on the left end. An external pulling force must be exerted to balance the total magnetic force so the net force will be zero and the loop will travel at constant speed v . Fmag = I (B1 h B2 h) = F substitution of the result for the current gives F = (B1 B2 )vh (B1 h B2 h) R solving for v v= FR (B1 B2 )2 h2
