Oct. 21st Do Now: Provide context and meaning I washed the weather and the journey from my face and hands, went out to the memorable old house that it would have been so much better for me never to have entered, never to have seen (Dickens 358). Context (plot): Pip has left Magwitch on the lie that he must see Joe to visit Ms. Havisham and Estella. As he stops in at the Blue Boar, he meets Drummle who suggests that he has been with Estella. Meaning (theme): The attempt to wash away the past reminds readers of Jaggers with his constant hand washing. Pip wishes to wash the bitter taste left from his journey through life and the harsh turn he perceives it to have taken when the convict announced that he was the benefactor. Since Estella is no longer meant for him, he wishes to wash away the memory of the house that raised her and gave him his hollow dream of becoming a gentleman. Aim: What role does Magwitch serve in the development of Pips character?
