ROAD TRAFFIC SAFETY AS AN ELEMENT OF RURAL ROAD

FUNCTIONAL CLASSIFICATION
Summary: Road traffic safety as a major problem of road transportation has to be included,
directly or indirectly, in all planning and design phases of road networks and/or its sections
both in rural and urban environment. Traffic safety aspects have to be adequately included in
the highest level of functional classification and consistently followed through defined design
program for each road section. In this article basic functional classification criteria will be
presented with special emphasis on hierarchical structure of network function as a
precondition for rational network organization at a required level of traffic safety.
Compatible with functional type of road, elements of road section design program related to
traffic safety are presented in some detail.
