2. Students will connect the idea of counting with addition and subtraction. 3. Introductory Activities Students will be engaged via the Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons Video.

4. Developmental Activities Students will review counting-on procedure for adding. Students will complete the Pete the Cat Buttons counting activity within their small groups. 5. Culminating Activities Students will write in their Math Journals (in their own words) the procedure for adding and subtracting buttons. 6. Assessment (Evaluation of the days objectives/ assessing students learning.)

1. Formal counting assessment will be done individually at the teachers desk. 2. Students will be evaluated on their responses in their Math Journals. 7. Modifications for Special Needs 8. Modifications will be made as necessary according to IEPs or sight/behavior problems.

Alternate Activities This book lends itself well to music activities as well as drama/movement, which would integrate additional standards into the lesson plan. Teach Petes song to students before the video. Give them a cue to listen for and encourage them to sing along when it is time.
