The very hungry caterpillar

Storytelling
Name of the book : The very hungry caterpillar Author : Eric Carle Target group : kindergarten
Objectives: Become familiarized with the days of the week Be able to predict Affective goals : Possess a different outlook on eating (nutrition) Reflect on their own lives, what they eat, and what they do.

Pre-activity
The children will be introduced to the book by the front cover.

There will be some pre-reading questions:


What do you think the book is about? What do caterpillars do? Have you ever seen a caterpillar with so many colors? How big is a caterpillar?

Warming up
Materials:craft foam (red, yellow, green, purple, purple); glue ; elastic; scissors.

Students will Cut out the various shapes for the mask. Green and yellow circles for eyes; purple antennas; and red semi-circle for the face. Using the glue , join all the various pieces together

Presenting the story to children:


I will start off by reading the page and slowly showing the picture to the students. I have selected three different pages to ask a question What day do you think is next? on page 4. What else do you think the caterpillar will eat? on page 6. What will happen when the caterpillar is full? on page 10.

1. Circle the foods that are healthy 2. Cross out the foods that are not healthy

the children put cards in order from Sunday to Saturday

. Roll a Caterpillar
Give the children a die and paper with pencil. As they roll the die have them draw the corresponding part of the caterpillar. The first one to get their caterpillar drawn is the winner.

The children use the key as a guide to color each section.

The Caterpillar Salad


Create a fruit salad with ingredients from the book:

1 apple
2 pears 3 plums 4 strawberries 5 oranges (Clementines would work best for this) Mint leaves for garnish

Then share with the whole class.!!!

Share/Bookmark
Make a caterpillar to display in the classroom or hallway showing each book that has been read. Parents can see the books the kids have been reading!
