Application

Bucket elevators are used for vertical transport of bulk materials. The fast-running FLS bucket elevators can handle lumps up to 50 mm in size and can withstand temperatures up to 350oC. The FLS fast-running elevator is designed for centrifugal discharge. The capacities given on the dimensioning graphare with 75% filling of the buckets whereas the corresponding motor size is calculated for 100% filled buckets. The chain speed is 1.0-1,9 m/s. FLS also supply slow-running elevators with a chain speed of 0.40-0.63 m/s. It is recommended to have the FLS bucket elevator equipped with a barring drive. The elevator chains, dimensioned to DIN 764 and DIN 766 specifications, are made of special hardened steel.

Design and operation

The FLS designed chain bows are furthermore hardened at wearing points. The elevator is designed to DIN 15251 and the bucket is designed to DIN 15234 specifications and, in addition, reinforced on the back plate. When used for abrasive materials the digging edge is also reinforced. The elevator design allows for the buckets to dig in the material which inevitably collects in the bottom of the casing. The drive station comprises roller chain transmission and gear unit with backstop. Hydraulic coupling is mounted between gear unit and motor when motor power exceeds 55 kW. Take-up bearings have easily replaceable, selflubricating bushings. The maintenance requirements of the FLS bucket elevators are negligible. Chain wheels have replaceable segment rims. The type designations (e.g.H 800) of the FLS bucket elevators indicate fast-running type (H) and bucket width in mm.

The capacity (t/h) of a bucket elevator depends on the lifting height (m), the bulk density of the material (kg/I), the volume per time unit (m3/h), and chain speed (m/s). The type selection diagrams are based on 75% degree of filling and the chain speed concerned (1.0-1.9 m/s). When sizing an elevator, both the volume V and the load L must be plotted. V should be within the yellow sector, while L should be in either the red or yellow sectors. The motor size (blue curves) depends on lifting height (m) and performance(t/h).

Example 1: Desired capacity: Raw meal with a bulk density of 0.8 kg/I to be lifted 50 m (C) at a rate of 70 t/h ~ 88 m3/h. Solution: All three parameters are plotted on the diagrams in the middle. Size H 500 can only lift this load up to about 30 m (), while size H 630 has the plotting L in the coloured sector, and the plotting V in the yellow sector, and is thus suitable for the task. L coordinates indicate a motor size 30 kW. From the table below the gear speed is found to be 90 rpm, and the weight 5950 + (220 x 50) + (190 x 50) = 26,450 kg. Example 2: Desired capacity: Cement with a bulk density o 1.2 kg/I to be lifted 40 m (C) at a rate of 310 t/h ~ 260 m3/h. Solution: All three parameters are plotted on the dia grams to the right. Size H 1000 has the plotting L in the red sector, and the plotting V in the yellow sector, and is thus suitable for the task L coordinates indicate a motor size 90 kV\i From the table below the gear speed is found t( be 71 rpm, and the weight 12,570 + (340 x 40) 4 (328 x 40) = 39,290 kg.
