Discussion Questions: Luke 6:43-45

These discussion questions are designed to help you reflect upon and apply the message from the Scriptures. You can use these by yourself for reflection, or you could use these with your family or small group for discussion.

Introduction: Many of us speak tens of thousands of words every day. So many in fact that we dont give a second thought to them. Yet they are very powerful. Can you think of an example or two from your life when your words literally changed the course of your life or a relationship? Questions: 1. In vs. 43-44, Jesus uses a simply analogy from Scripture. How would you summarize his main point in your own words?

2. This simple truth is going to illuminate a spiritual truth about people. According to verse 45, what is that spiritual truth?

3. Jesus says that out of his heart, a person speaks. What does the heart signify?

Cf. Mark 7:21-23. How do these verses clarify and amplify what Jesus is saying in Luke 6:45? 4. Pastor John summarized Jesus by saying, Put simply, our mouths obey our hearts. What did he mean by that? 5. The main idea of the message was Your words show what is in your heart. Can you give some real life examples of this?

6. Why should we take seriously the fruit of our lips? How does Jesus highlight how seriously God takes our words? Cf. Matthew 12:26. Finish this sentence, Jesus cares about our words because he cares about our ________.

7. In the application, Pastor John said that we need to learn to trace the fruit to the root. What did he mean by that?

8. What hope do we have that God can work good within us? Look up Galatians 5:22-23.

Conclusion: What is the one thing you want to take away from this study to remember or to make a change in your life? How does this text help you understand your need for Jesus? How does this text challenge you to follow him?

Renewing your mind: Luke 6:44, the good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of the evil treasure produces evil, for out of the heart his mouth speaks.
