16.532 Computational Electromagnetics: First Examination Sp.

2012 Solve the problems and submit as an Attachment to Assignment Submission Box as usual. If the solutions are handwritten make sure the writings are legible. In scanning, use portrait and not landscape. Submit, as pdf, document Rule 1: Do the homework on your own Rule 2: You may consult your text, all the material I have given you as handouts including homework problem solutions supplied by me. For computations you are permitted to use MATLAB but you have to submit the details of the code used as well as a suitable write up explaining the steps involved in writing the code. Your answers should be clearly marked.

Problem 1: Express shift operator E in terms of the central difference operator

Problem 2 Rework the example in Section 15.3.3 by using same weight functions but different basis functions given below: magnitude (x xn) < 1/(N+1) otherwise

fn = C(x-xn) = cos [ /2*(N+1)* magnitude(x-xn)], = 0, where xn = n/(N+1). Use N =2.

Compare by plotting the solution you obtain with the exact solution given by (15.67c) of the text. Sketching f1, and f2 will help. Problem 3: Determine the lowest TM and TE mode cutoff kc numbers for a waveguide with the cross section shown in the Figure of Problem P 16.2 and PEC Boundaries. Assume air as the medium inside the waveguide. Use the nodes and elements obtained by connecting P to the nodes 1,2,3. The purpose is to illustrate the technique rather than obtain accurate answers. Problem 4 P16.9 from the text
