These are in chronological order (order of


Lists of Materials or time) and are normally numbered. They
Equipment tell the reader exactly what to do and
when to do it so that they succeed.
Bossy Words that that tell the reader what
Imperative Verbs to do. Cut, fold, Walk, Stop, boil…
Usually at the beginning of the instruction.
Introduction Statement Tells the reader when to do something. Ie
Firstly, Next, Afterwards…
So the reader knows (right from the start)
Time Connectives what they need to gather to complete the
instructions. Usually in Bullet Points
These help the reader to know what to do
Hints/Tips/Safety
in a visual way. They must relate to the
Precautions text!
Added information that might help the
Pictures or Diagrams reader stay safe or solve any small
problems that they may encounter.
Tells the reader/audience what each
Sub Headings section is about. They are smaller than the
Main Heading.
