Police patrol was focused in
areas with heavier student pres-

Media relations officer Ken

Interrobang that students respond
to the Project and problems arise
when a lineis crossed and people
are disturbing and disrespecting
neighbours.
London Police released this
years numbers and felt the pro-

In thefour weeks Project Learn

great divide between student and
non-student offenders: 15 charges
were laid to students and the
remaining62werenon-students.
Last years number was slightly
lower, where 61 people were
charged; sevenof whichwerestu-

When it came to Provincial

Give your brain a
break this week On the morning of November
25, downtown London and
Stratfordwill beasight to behold:
hundreds of red scarves will be
draped over lampposts, fire
hydrants, trees and fences to
brighten up the city with a punch
of colour and raise awareness for
HIV/AIDS. Thisisthesecondyear
of the Regional HIV/AIDS
ConnectionsRedScarf Project.
TheRedScarf Project was ini-
tiated as part of our agencys
efforts to raise awareness in the
community about HIV/AIDS and
its impacts, saidMeredithFraser,
RHACsdirector of education. The
campaign is run in support of
AIDS Awareness Week, from
November 25 to December 1, and
WorldAIDS Day onDecember 1.
Most people living in Canada
tend to think of HIV/AIDS in a
global context as opposed to a
local context. Because the virus
has been identified for over 30
years, I think sometimes people
become desensitized to its impact
andits effect, saidFraser. AIDS
AwarenessWeek isanopportunity
for us to put HIV/AIDS back on
the map as an issue of concern,
something that affects people in
our community every day, and to
worktoreducestigmaandincrease
access to appropriate and compe-
tent healthcare.
Since RHAC is a local agency
withalocal focus, itsteamwanted
to create a visual symbol that
would draw attention in the com-
munity. We thought about red
scarves; when theyre wrapped
around someones neck, they look
like the red ribbon, a symbol of
HIV/AIDS. Itsoneof thefirst if
not the first healthawarenessrib-
bon.
Last year, a teamof volunteers
draped more than 350 red scarves
tagged with information about
HIV/AIDS around downtown
LondonandStratford. Peoplewere
encouragedto takeascarf, wear it
tokeepwarm, andspreadinforma-
tion and awareness about
HIV/AIDS. The idea was that
peoplewouldseethemwhiledriv-
ing into work, Fraser said. She
woke up early so she could see
RichmondStreet coveredwith red
scarves. I got to work just before
8 a.m., and [the scarves] were
almost all gone already, she
remembered. Though she didnt
see the scarves in their natural
habitat, she did see people them
wearingthemthroughout theday.
It wasreallyamazingandwon-
derful andimpactful, saidFraser.
We were struck and touched by
the enthusiasm and the kindness
and generosity of spirit extended
by the community who made so
many incredible and beautiful
works of art to help raise aware-
ness and ensure that folks were
cozy in the cold months. It was a
wonderful success.
This year, RHAC is hoping to
collect 400 red scarves. Were
asking for people to contribute in
waystheyreableto, feel comfort-
able with, and enjoy. One of the
ways peoplecan makeacontribu-
tionistoknitor crochetor weavea
scarf, Fraser said. The only two
criteria to follow are that the
scarves are red and that they are
6x60in. (15x150cm.). Other than
that, creative licence is up to the
volunteer whosmakingthem.
If youreaknitter, acrocheter or
aweaver, youcandonateas many
scarves as you like just give
Fraser and her team a heads up
first. If youcant knit your wayout
of a paper bag, RHAC is also
accepting donations of red yarn,
knitting needles, crochet hooks or
money to support the purchase of
thesematerials. All donationsmust
besubmittedtotheRHACofficeat

Community members are invit-
ed to attend theRHACs vigils in
Stratford on November 30 and in
LondononDecember 1. Checkout

Remember when J oseph Gordon-Levitt

in Batman? Don J on? Remember when
J ustin Timberlake started acting? When
Michael J ordan played baseball? There is
great debate amongst artists whether its
best tomaster oneart form, or beadynamic
artist, getting ones brush wet with many
different media. But when tackling this
question, I believethemost important thing
not tobethemediumchosen, but thepoten-

your message, it isbest tochoosetheappro-

Its taboo to even utter art and adver-

the two. But I think the fact that they are

actually working to arts advantage at this
point in time. The difference between art
andadvertisingliesinintention. Intentionis,
as Ive stated in previous articles, what
definesart. Bothart andadvertisingattempt

solely to make money, whereas arts is to
encouragecritical thinkingandfor theaudi-

ideals. Were lucky to be artists in a time

loves Zooey Deschanel becauseof this, and
as a result, shes become exceedingly

If an adagency is tryingto sell atoy car

this: if oneistryingtoportrayananti-estab-

Ontarios Auditor General Bonnie Lysyk
hasreleasedher final report onthecancelled
gas plants in Oakville and Mississauga and
its another crushing blow to the Ontario
Liberal Partyscredibility. WhentheLiberal
Party announced that theplans for Oakville
would be scrapped, they quoted a cost of
around $40 million. The final report of the
Auditor General put that cost at $675 mil-
lion. The combined cost of both cancella-
tions: anestimated$1.1billion.
The crucial point in this entire debacle
was solidified back in February when
Premier Kathleen Wynnepublicly admitted
that thegasplantswerecancelledinadelib-
erate attempt to woo voters in the Oakville
andMississaugaregionswherethey wereto
bebuilt. Her admission is shocking only in
that it shows the pervasive attitude within
governmentthatitsbetter toaskforgiveness
than permission and the worst part is that
theyre right. There was a poll taken in
September that showed Wynnes popularity
asvirtually unchangedwhencomparedwith
a similar poll taken before the cancellation
scandal hit. Thesamepoll showedthat more
peoplethought thegovernment was doinga
goodjobwiththeir energyportfolioafter the
cancellationsthanbefore.
Wynne has made the optics of the issue
even worse by her promise to de-politicize
theprocess of locatinglargeenergy genera-
tionprojects. Whiletakingfull responsibili-
ty for the disaster and promising it wont
happenagain, shes ensuringthat theres no
opportunity to foul up the process in the
futureasopposedtojust behavingethically.
Her strategy is the same one used by drug
addicts who go into rehab: I cant mess up
againif I cant benear it. Insteadof institut-
ingsomeformof oversight or accountabili-
ty, shes simply taking the opportunity for
any political involvement in the process,
negativeor positive, off thetable.
Unfortunately for the province, the
OntarioLiberalshaveprovedtheyrewilling
to make the wrong decisions if theyre the
popular ones. Thevoters essentially haveto
decide for themselves whether the Ontario
Liberal Party is stupidanddishonest or just
dishonest. Thelatter qualificationisself-evi-
dent sincethey allowed concerns over their
poll numbers to affect financial decision
making but it has yet to be determined
whether they knew their own $40 million
estimate was flawed when they made the
decision.
The issue of credibility is arguably the
most influential contributor to a partys
chance of success in an election and for
somereasonpeopledont seemtothink that
Wynneshasbeencompromised. Politicians
areexpectedtoclaimtheir partywill doalot
of things, but its whether people believe
them that counts. Voters are unlikely to
examine the fiscal aftermath of every cam-
paign promise and they assume that, while
some platforms have a heftier price tag, all
platforms could beimplemented for aman-
ageablefee. TheOntario Liberals promised

Should a convicted Nazi war criminal
receiveafuneral?
You may have heard about the death of
100-year-old Erich Priebke. According to
Israelnationalnews.com, he had been living
under housearrest ever sinceacourt in1998
convictedhimof overseeingthemassacreof
335peopleattheArdeatinecavesnear Rome
in 1944. The massacre was revenge for an
Italian attack that killed 33 Germans.
Seventy-five of the victims of Ardeatine
wereJ ews, somewereyoungboys, andone
was aCatholic priest. Victims wereshot in
the back of the head, according to
International BusinessNewsonline.
To the end, Priebke denied any guilt.
Reporters write that he remained unrepen-
tant, that heclaimedhewasonly following
orders. He has been labeled a Holocaust
denier.
With his death in Rome, there were
options regarding the fate of his remains.
Somerecommended that thebody betaken
to Germany and incinerated since this is
what happenedto millions of victims of the
Nazi regime. Another option was for the
corpsetobereturnedtoArgentinafor burial.
After all, Priebkelivedtherefor 50yearsfol-
lowing World War II. Or the Catholic
Church in Rome could have provided a
funeral. But bothArgentinaandtheCatholic
Church refused the body. The Vatican for-
badeall churchesinRomefromprovidinga
funeral for Priebke.
It is easy to accept that Argentina would
refuse any further connection with Priebke
and his family. But the Catholic Church?
Shouldnt it have been more accommodat-
ing?
A closer look, however, shows the situa-
tion to be more complicated. While the
Vatican did say that no funeral for Priebke
couldtakeplaceinachurch, it didsaythat a
Catholic priest couldofficiatefor thefamily
in a private ceremony. And in the end, a
priest of a reportedly ultra-conservative
Catholic society ledthefuneral inAlbano, a
town near Rome. There were angry protes-
tors, and thepriest needed theprotection of
police. But thefuneral took place.
Maybethis was all for thebest. It would
havebeenunwisefor theCatholicChurchto
allow a funeral in a church in Rome. Old
wounds could have been reopened; there
couldhavebeenlarge, uglyprotests, perhaps
less against the church, and more against
Priebke himself and the memories he left
behind.
But there were also other wounds which
perhapsdidnot needtoberevisited, wounds
that do not reflect well on the Church. It
turnsout that Priebkereceivedhelpafter the
war froma Catholic Bishop who had pro-
Nazi leanings. He, according to
Israelnationalnews.com, supplied Priebke
with Vatican travel documents. Likely
Catholicofficialsfeel that theyhavedoneall
theycantocomecleanabout actsof support
for the Nazis. It is reasonable that they
wouldnot feel obligatedtomakethemselves
the objects of public anti-Catholic protests
onceagain.
So Priebke received a Christian, church
burial. A muted one, but a church burial
nonetheless.
That theChurchgavehimaburial is as it
shouldbe. Priebke, inspiteof all thehorrors
connectedwithhimandhisapparent lack of
remorse, was ahuman being. TheChristian
understanding of human beings starts with
this: Weareall createdinthelikeness, in
theimageof God, Gn. 1:27.
Thereis much that wedo that disfigures,
that desecrates that image. Certainly, some
of thosedesecrations arepublic, invitecon-
demnation, and are not easily forgotten.
However, no person should be demonized.
For if each, single person is not protected
from being demonized, is anyone? Am I?
Areyou?
J esus once faced a group of angry men
about to stoneto deathawomanfor behav-
iour punishableby death. Hetold themthat
they were free to cast the first stone pro-
vided that none of them had ever sinned.
Andthats just it. Weall have. Andyet, we
all remainhuman.
NOTES FROM DAY SEVEN
MICHAEL VEENEMA

Nazisarepeopletoo?
I discussedinapreviousweekthatthetwo
topics, Christianity and social justice, are
themes that have informed the way I view
the world. These two topics can of course
easilybeseparated, but inmylife, I findthat
theyareoftenlinked. Idliketosharewhyit
has been thecasefor methat my Christian
values and my desire to see social justice
thrivinginour society areclosely linked.
Social Justice as a Christian
Sincesocial justiceisoftenmisunderstood
and criticized, when first introduced to the
subject I asked myself, Is God really con-
cernedabout social in-/justice? This might
not bethefirst question for everyoneand I
canunderstandandrespectthat, butfor meit
wassomethingI neededtoknow. Well sure-
lyit isnosurprisethat I haveindeedcometo
theconclusion that God is concerned about
what is referred to as social justice -
things suchas equality, respect, dignity and
lovefor our fellowhumanbeings.
In my search I had discovered that the
J udeo-Christianfaithispackedwithawealth
of examples regarding Gods concern for
social justice (far too many to mention in
just onearticle). Godscompassionandlove
for theneglectedisapopular themeinscrip-
ture. I believe that studying the scriptures
will clearly show thereader that God cares
about and loves every human being and
thereforecaresabout social justice.
For example the psalmist says that God
securesjusticefor thepoor andupholdsthe
causeof theneedy, Ps. 140:12, andlistens
totheir cry, defendingthefatherlessandthe
oppressed, Ps. 10:17-18. Thegreat histori-
an, doctor andGospel writer Lukewrotethat
God sent His Son to preach good news to
thepoor proclaimfreedomfor theprison-
ers [and] release the oppressed, Lk. 4:18-
19.
There is no shortage of scriptural exam-
ples, and will not bore you with any more.
But thesimplepoint hereis that social jus-
ticeis linkedto theChristianlifebecauseit
is something scripture and Christian tradi-
tion highlight as important to God. Simply
explainedGodlovesusall, andtoHimevery
singlehumanbeingis animagebearer with
purposeandvalue.
By way of contrast, then, social injustice
undermines this train of thought and is an
insulttoGodsplanandpurposeandadenial
of theScripturesthat believersholdsodear-
ly.
Todisregardhumanbeings, tonot respect
their dignity, tonottreateachasequal andto
notfightfor loveisquitesimplyatoddswith
a well-informed and researched view of
scripture, traditionandhumanexperience.
Sowheredowegofromhere? Well, first
of all Id liketo makeclear that embracing
social justice is not exclusively a Christian
thingandthat all humansshouldembraceit.

This is avery exciting timeto bealive, yet
thevastmajorityof peopleseemtobelostin
a hypnotizing black hole of generic brain-
washingculture. Imnot sayingthat individ-
ualityisdead, but theculturethat permeates
our society is like a poison that tells us
whats important, what welike, what wedo
and leaves everything elseunimportant and
irrelevant.
Somepeoplehavearguedthat weliveina
zombiesociety. This is apretty validpoint,
especially among the youth. There have
beenreportsof public school testsfrom100
years ago that someadults cant successful-
ly pass. Its no surprise that education has
fallensteadily inits standards. It seems like
withtheriseof televisionandthedigital age,
education sunk lower and peoples brain
development dulled.
Theprioritiesof our generationhavebeen
set terribly askew. Most peopledont know
whats going on around the world they
think its unimportant. They dont even
knowabout thecorruptionof their owngov-
ernment and the poisons in their food and
water which slowly sicken them and set
themup with a future of disease and debt.
Over thesummer, anAlbertacourtreacheda
conclusion that Stephen Harpers reelection
was fraudulent. This never made it to the
mainstreammedia, so no protests, no reper-
cussions set in place. Canadahas chosen to
followtheexampleof America, fluoridating
water and growing genetically modified
organisms. We are pretty much part of a
massiveexperiment onour health. Whereis
the self-informed youth fighting for a
brighter future?
October 12 was World Food Day. It was
also International MarchonMonsanto Day.
If youdont knowabout Monsanto, dosome
research. This company dumped thousands
uponthousandsof AgentOrangeinVietnam
back in another one of Americas twisted
wars built on self-interest. In addition to
massive environmental damage, the chemi-
cal scarred the Vietnamese, leaving them
with generations of disabled and deformed.
Now, thiscompany whichwasalsorecently
awarded the most prestigious food prize is
growing our food. The number of crimes
beingdonetoour populationis overwhelm-
ing. Obesity, genetic damage, allergies and
diabetes are only few of the problems that
werent around on such a large scale 50
years ago. Consider autism, the massive
increase of its prevalence through recent
years. Onasidenote, youshouldthinktwice

If you consider history and news unim-
portant, you are very wrong and you are
becomingexactly thetypeof mindless con-
sumer that thepeopleincontrol want. If you
look to the mainstreammedia for all your
information, you are likely terribly unin-
formed. History is fascinating, and if you
look closely enough, you will realize it
repeats itself. The Internet is pure anarchy.
That is why SOPA and CISPA happened,
they know the danger the internet poses to
their control. So take advantage. Do
research, armyourself with knowledge. Be

Hailing from Burlington,
Bombing Neverland may be the

jam sessions and lineup changes,
these four rockers have created a
high energy, raw, sexy show that
could captivate any passerby.
Strongly influencedby bands such
as Nirvana and The Pretty
Reckless, Handsome Harlot has
createdtheperfect fusionbetween
someof theworlds most beloved
music genres.
Gilbert described the bands
sound as rock with big drums,
bigger guitars and raspy vocals!
We pull a lot of influences from
other genres through grunge and
alternativerock. A big component
to our sound is that it needs to be
loud and in-your-face to the point
itsalmost offensive.

The band seems to have every-

Bookshelves may be one of the
hardest itemsinyour hometodec-
orate. It can take several hours of
researching pictures in magazines
andonPinterestjusttogetideason
how to set up your books along
with accessories. Here are a few
simpletips to get you started with
decoratingyour bookshelf.
One of the biggest trends that I
havebeennoticinginall thehome
decor magazinesistohavecontrast
or aprint on theback of thebook
shelf. To add wallpaper or paint
the back of your bookshelf a dif-
ferent colour will had personality
andinterest toyour bookshelf right
away. This will customise it to
your style and leave you with a
one-of-a-kindbookshelf.
Whether or not you decide to
changethebackof your bookshelf,
youcanstill haveawell-decorated
bookshelf that will leave a lasting
impression.
Your next step is covering any
book that has a tacky cover with
white paper. You simply find
white paper that is big enough to
wraparoundthecover of thebook.
If thisisdonetoseveral booksyou
canwritethenameof thebook on
the new front cover. Covering
some of your books with white
paper will giveyoucolour unityon
your bookshelf.
Tohaveauniquebookshelf, you
must havemorethanjust bookson
your shelf. Basketsandaccessories
is must on every bookshelf! Some
good ideas for bookshelf acces-
sories are flowers, letters, vases,
glass ball, candles, sea shells and
pictures to add some personality!
Thebasketsandaccessoriesshould
reflect the theme of your book
shelf.
Placing the books and acces-
sories on the shelf can be very
tricky. I suggest havingavariation
of how you place your books.
Have books standing vertical and
some place lying horizontal. With
your books that arestandingverti-
cal it wouldbeagreat spot to add
avaseor apicture.
On top of books that are lying
horizontal, you could place some-
thinglikeaglass ball or seashells.
Youdonot needtoaddaccessories
to every shelf, and to keep your
bookshelves from looking clut-
tered do not fill a shelf entirely
with books. Last but not least I
alwaysplacebasketsat thebottom
of thebookshelf andstoremyodds
andendsinthem.
No one ever said decorating a
bookshelf wouldbeeasy, butitjust

shelf. Remember, always pick a
theme first and have a bit of a
visiontohowyouwant your book-
shelf to look like. Good luck and

confidence, but every once in a
while, makeup can do things that
are completely annoying.
Sometimes it may be the mixture
of two products you are using,
sometimes it can be an improper
application, or sometimes it can
just be a poor quality cosmetic.
Here are some of the top annoy-
ances with makeup and how you
canstopthemfromhappening!
Oneproblemthat is very appar-
ent (especially withprimers, some
foundations and face creams) is
products that will roll or ball up
on the face. Youll normally see
this when you areapplying aface
product and then it starts to just
makeamess of theentireapplica-
tion, usuallyresultinginare-appli-
cation. The number one cause of
this is applying way too much
product; products like primers do
not needaheavyapplication, espe-
cially if they haveasiliconebase.
Applying too much moisturizer
can causethis as well, as theskin
can only absorb so much product
until it starts to roll off the face.
Sometimes, lessreally ismore.
Another makeup pet peeve is
when an eyeliner simply wont
sharpen and just keeps breaking.
Themain culprit of this is usually
thesharpener youareusing; if its
anon-makeup pencil sharpener, if
its oldor if it hasnt beencleaned
inawhile, thisisdefinitelytheroot
of your problem. If thesharpener is
old, the blade gets really dull,
whichprohibits asmoothsharpen-
ing and will just keep constantly
crackingthewood. Thesamegoes
if thereareexcess eyeliner or lip-
liner bits in it. Another possibility
is that thepencil wasnt manufac-
tured properly so the product is
separated fromthe wood, causing
it tobevery weak.
Oneof themost irritatingmake-
up blunders is when a foundation
startstolook cakey, flakyor just
plainuneven. This canbedueto a
number of reasons: not enough
moisturizer (dry skin), mixing an
oil-based product and a water-
based product, or using too much
compact powder. Whentheskinis
too dry, foundationwill apply dif-
ferently to the drier patches of
skin, causing it to look flaky and
uneven, sousingaproper moistur-
izer is critical. Also, if you are
using a compact powder as either
your foundationor settingpowder,
itcanquicklystarttomaketheface
look cakey as compacts have a
lot of gum and binders in them,
which will cause product buildup.
Lower quality compacts tend to
haveevenmorefillers, soif cost is
anissue, stickwithaloosepowder.
Even though these pet peeves
can pop up every oncein awhile,
makeup should always be a fun
thing and nothing to stress over!
There are always solutions and
answers to makeupannoyances. If
you have any other pet peeves,
sendmeanemail andIdbemore

I will admit, I felt like I was
cheating by reviewing abook that
was required reading for my elec-
tivecreditthisyear, butthenagain,
Calculating God by Robert J .
Sawyer isprobablyoneof themost
engrossing novels Ive ever been
sucked into in along time. Hell, I
practically finishedthethinginan
overnight sitting.
It really exemplifies its position
of beingthetypeof novel tomixin
factuality (andnot religiousapolo-
geticsasthetitleseemstosuggest)
with (science) fiction, like Dan
Brown but without the over-
wrought prose to suffer through.
Althoughits story is largely just a
backgroundfor thecharacters var-
iousconversationsanddebatesthat
doesnt truly progress much until
thevery endof thefinal act, noth-
ingsuffersindeliveringanabsorb-
ingexperience.
TomJ ericho is anaverageman,
save for his scientific knowledge
as paleontologist for the Royal
Ontario Museumof Toronto, who
has been thrust into extraordinary
circumstance; namely, being one
of thefirst humans to initiatecon-
tact with extraterrestrials. This
alien being, a Forhilnor named
Hollous, has comefromlightyears
away with his companions to dis-
cuss theexistenceof agod. Well,
thevisitors arent quiteproselytiz-
ers as much as scientists finding
reason to believe that their exis-
tenceistheworkof ahyper-intelli-
gent being that co-ordinated the
development of various civiliza-
tions to reach technologies within
afewhundredyearsof eachother.
Coupled with Toms discovery of
having terminal lung cancer, the
book creates an emotionally cruel
dynamic of aman trying to scien-
tifically refute the existence of a
creator whiledealingwithhisown
mortality.
Like I mentioned earlier,
Calculating God is NOT, and
never comes close to, religious
apologetics. It doesnt attempt to
provide ammunition for either
sides of the debate, but rather,
remains strictly agnostic. Oh yes,
J erichoandHollusdebatethrough-
out the book on why a creator
doesnt and does exist respective-
ly, but thosedebateslargelyfollow
thelogic of thebooks world, one
where alien civilizations exist in
near-synchronous development.
Dont fault thebooksEarth-based
sciences, though its pretty solid
initsownregard.
Philosophical talking points
aside, how does Calculating God
fare as a purely science-fiction
book? Pretty well, amongthereli-
giousdebate. Thetwoalienspecies
actually seen in the book, the
Forhilnors and the Wreeds, are
detailedinwaysmost peopledont
eventhinkaboutwhenimagininga
species completely unlike us, and
definitely moveaway fromaman-
in-a-rubber-suit mentality. Outside
fromsimplelanguagebarriers, for
example, the three species have
difficultyincommunicationdueto
thewaystheyrewiredtothink, the
humans more deductive, and the
alienbeingsmoremoralistic. Their
differencesfromusaremuchmore
fleshed out than just looking
unusual and carrying odd cultural
traits. Conversely, the aliens are
not all that muchunlikeus, andas
characters, are written to be sym-
patheticandrelatabledespitelook-
inglikegiant, super-intelligentspi-
ders.
Calculating God can be emo-
tionally tiring at times, simply
because of how much youll end
up liking the characters. A large
chunk of Calculating God, outside
of Toms cancer being the most
active subplot, is conversation
betweenHollusandTom, but writ-
tenwell enoughthat youwouldnt
noticeentirechaptersarededicated
to their various debates.
Calculating Gods rather flimsy

it is; character-drivenwhileletting

S.T.A.L.K.E.R series (PC)
Developed by Ukranian studio
GSC Gameworld, thefirst entry to
the series, S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow
of Chernobyl, remained nothing
more than a gamers dream for
nearly seven years, dodging and
missing release dates routinely.
Finally, with its (buggy) 2007
release, the game delivered on its
promise of a beautifully decayed
open-world first-person horror
environment ripe for exploration,
astheplayer protagonist must find
and kill a mysterious bounty
hunter named Strelok, and form
alliances with various factions
alongtheway. Thegamessetting,
aChernobyl heavilypoisonedbya

terrifyingcreaturesthat seemnear-

entire series is quite brilliant, and
is worth playing despitethefairly

Ill let you in on a little secret:
The fact that youre reading this
right nowsort of terrifiesme. I still
cant pick up this paper and read
my own writing, knowing that
someoneelsehasor will.
I used to hate talking to people
andavoidedone-to-onechatsfrom
anyone but friends. Conferences
with teachers, for example, were
brutal. I struggled to deliver my
wordsinproper order without trip-
ping over themselves; my brain
seemed to process things at half-
speed; and often my ears would
wander beyondtheconversationat
hand, constantlyforcingmeintoan
awkward, Sorry, could you say
that again... again? Eye contact
guillotinedmybreath, whileorder-
ing food over a counter or check-
ing out items with a cashier
required accompaniment. Talking
onthephone? A nightmare.
Needlesstosay, theonlineworld
was my escapeandhas been, until
recently, what I considered to be
themost ideal modeof communi-
cation. Text was so much more
manageable, conversation much
more tactile. Words could be said
then a moment later retracted.
There was less pressure to reply
instantly and my half-speed brain
actually had leeway when it came
to responses. Best of all, no eye
contact. With a computer in my
homeat all times, I think its safe
to assume I cultivated my social
anxieties at an early age without
realizing. AndgrowthemI did, as
it wasonlyafewmonthsagothat I
mademy first phonecall by my
own will in years. (It literally
required a pep talk and a concen-
trated, cross-leggedpositioninthe
silence of my mothers walk-in
closet, I kidyounot.)
Years passed before I realized
mytendencytogravitatetothevir-
tual worlds, as I hid my social
ineptitude well fromeven myself.
With situations that I knew were
typically prone to evoking social
anxiety, such as presentations and
performances, I seemed to do fine
andrarelywasnervous soI clear-
ly had no problem! I joined in
school clubs, too its not like I
was willingly a recluse! I con-
vinced myself. But these feats of
socializationwereall donewiththe
assistance of others (class presen-
tations wereingroups, dramaper-
formances depended on several
actors, I never soloedinband) and
in the familiar environment of
school. Orderingpizzaby myself?
Well, that was a separate sea to
sail.
Most disappointing in those
times of need was the lack of
receptivity fromthose around me,
a problemIve only realized after
recognizing theseissues as requir-
ing concretesolutions. My friends
werefinewithonlinerelationships,
as most of my generation and
beyond seem to prefer, so they
took nonotice. Myparentswereof
nohelpandsimply peggedmy not
wantingtogoout aslaziness. For a
while in Grade 10, I had a Child
and Youth counsellor; she met
with me for a few weeks because
myscienceteacher couldntget me
tomakeeyecontact. My problems
werent really addressed with the
counsellor, though: I triedexpress-
ingtoher that everyoneseemedto
have a manual for life, and that I
was clueless in comparison, only
for her to reply, Everyone feels
that way. The only thing we
establishedwasthat I giveapret-
ty gooddeathstare.
Oddlyenough, it wasthat (dubi-
ous) compliment that allowed me
to break my bad habits. It wasnt
until I started routinely forcing
myself into really uncomfortable
situations through attending and
hostingparties, or goingout to eat
by myself for noparticular reason,
or usingmy deathstare as anad
hoc social interaction tool that I
began to improve. It was my own
makeshift therapy. Only after bid-
ing through so many tedious,
onlinerows with friends friends
withwhomI wasmorethanjollyin
person didI realizehowineffec-
tive virtual communication is.
Only after accepting my problems
did I get better. Becauseit was an
illness, still isanillnessthatlingers
as I tell you I havent read over a
single published article Ive writ-
ten for this paper. But this will be
thefirst oneIll read.
The problemis that there is no
problem, as far as thelouder voic-
esof societywill haveyoubelieve,
as far as I was led to believe. Its
onethingtobegluedtoacomput-
er screen all day by choice; its
another to cling to a machine for
fear of what liesbeyond, andthats
exactly what I did. This is aprob-
lem, and it will continue to be a
problem, as endless waves of
developed-country kids grow up
with and become increasingly
reliant on their Internet-enabled
third parent. I dont think there is
or will beaperfect solutionfor the
technological ocean in which we
unconsciously drown deeper,
every new smartphone a wave
pushingusfarther down. I doknow
that shutting the issue away, pre-
tendingitdoesntexist, suffocating
theelephantintheroomisfar from
helpful or healthy.
In order to address the impend-
ing Age of Antisocial, we must
first accept mental health and by
extension mental illness. Social
anxiety, depression, and phobias
arejust asvalidascancers, broken
bones or the flu. Id even argue
theyre more dangerous because
they can remain undetected by
even the patient. These illnesses,
too, require medicine, healing,
therapy. But dedicated recovery is
preceded by acknowledgement.
Mental health resides in thebrain,
whichispart of your bodyasmuch
as your heart and your lungs, so
mental health is ultimately physi-
cal health. Its real. So if between
clogged arteries and deep-rooted
insecurity youre still imagining a
great divisive fence, I think its
timeyoujust get over it.

When I startedworkingon this
article, I originally wanted to
investigate the correlation
between what we eat and the
resulting status of our mental
health. I thought that eating junk
meant that mental health would
suffer.
But after talking to Marnie
Wedlake, support and education
team leader with the Canadian
Mental Health Association
London-Middlesex charter, and
Tom Gantert, Fanshawe instruc-
tor and endurance athlete (who
also holds a PhD in nursing), I
gained knowledge from two
somewhat different views.
Wedlake approached the sub-
ject much likeI did that what I
eat in turn affects my mental
health.
Youarewhat youeat, andits
not just your body; itsyour mind
as well, she said. If you can
havefoodthat isnot chock full of
all kinds of preservatives and
chemicals, then its always good
for the body. If its good for the
body, then its good for the
mind.
If our brainis affectedby put-
ting all kinds of contrary sub-
stances into our systems
whether its additives, too much
caffeine, too much alcohol, street
drugs, preservatives its going
to haveaneffect, saidWedlake.
But Gantert sees bad eating
choices as a coping mechanism
for poor mental health, and also
lack of proper nutritionandlack
of activitycanleadtolower phys-
ical andmental health.
J unk will contribute to poor
mental health, headded. If Im
stressed out and I dont have the
coping or belief in myself Im
going to go to [junk food] for
release.
Why? Hesaidjunk foodmakes
peoplehappy itsinstant gratifi-
cation. The temporary bout of
happiness will most likely result
in minor weight gain, and thats
the short-term outcome, some-
thingsmall andeasy to overlook.
Gantert said peer groups dont
help either. You will never
exceed beyond the expectations
of your peers. Its not that bad.
Youlook fine. Hesaidaffirma-
tions like this help justify self-
perceptionas not that bad.
But long-term consequences
follow when great intake of junk
food results in noticeable weight
gain, compromisingmental health
status.
Might have disordered eating
patterns thenwemight get into
body image disturbances,
Gantert said. Its a roundabout
way. Were using the junk food
because of our poor mental
health.
Gantert said students are more
susceptible to climb aboard the
unhealthy-eating train when they
are emotionally drained because
of studying. It [makes it] that
much easier to make bad food
choices because their willpower
is shot, andviceversa.
This is particularly true during
high-stress periods of midterms
andfinals. Whenpeopleget anx-
ious, they just want that to go
[away], Gantert said. People
often dont eat junk food when
its not there or when theyre
calmandrelaxed.
Were not telling you to stop,
just know why youre doing it,
saidGantert. Isit becauseyoure
stressed? Know that you have a
choice and know the long-term
consequences.
If unhealthy eating is some-
thingyousuffer (andletsbehon-
est, who isnt reaching for the
occasional candy bar?), it might
be time to re-evaluate your own
mental health and make changes
withyour physical health.
Gantert said, How do we
change any behaviour? It has to
beamust, thenyouget usedto it
youseethebenefits.
This all gave me a lot to think
about. Howabout you?

weather is getting colder and the
amount of sunlight that we are
being exposed to is drastically
decreasing. The closer we get to
the winter months, the more we
may all start feeling theeffects of
Seasonal Affective Disorder
(SAD).
SAD has been categorized as a
typeof depressionthat occursdur-
ing the fall and winter months. If
you have been struggling to sleep
or concentrate, feelingtiredor irri-

riencing body aches, loss of sex
drive or increased appetite and
weight gain, youmay besuffering

Thesesymptoms usually start in
thefall and will gradually worsen
into the winter months. People
begin to feel these symptoms
becausetheyarenotbeingexposed

D intake comes from the sun. In
the winter months, we cant get a
sufficient amount of natural vita-
min D, so we need to make sure
that wefindit inother sources.
Inaperfect world, whenwefeel
symptoms of thewinter blues, we
would just hop on a plane and go
on a tropical vacation to be
exposed to more sunlight. Since
wecant all pack up our bags and
head to the Caribbean, here are
sometipsthat canhelpyoucopeat

If you find yourself experienc-
ing mild symptoms of SAD, you
may want to simply try adding
more vitamin D to your diet. The
first and most simple way to do
this is to head to your local phar-
macy andpick upabottleof vita-
min D or aliquid or capsuleform
of codliver oil. Theseoptionswill
giveyouthehighest concentration
of thevitamin.
If takingsupplements isnt right
for you, you can add somediffer-
ent foods to your diet to increase
your intakeof vitaminD. Someof
thefoods that youcanaddto your
diet that will helplessenthesymp-
toms of SAD include: fish, broc-
coli, salami, ham, sausage, eggs
andmushrooms. Whileat thegro-
cery store, try lookingfor someof
your favourite foods that come in
fortified variations, like bread,
noodles, soy products or orange
juice. This means that vitamin D
and other nutrients have been
addedtothesefoodstomakethem

improve your mood. If these tips
dont do the trick, there are even
more options that you can talk to
your doctor about, likebright light
therapy and various prescription
medications.

To be honest, in some cases
thats not too far off, and I think
those types of players truly
embody the beauty of traditional
role playing games. Today, we
think of Role PlayingGames
(RPGs) andimmediatelyof thesta-

Pokmon handheld games. Our

Intraditional tabletopgamesthat

but these games are not based on
competition or individuality.
Games like Dungeons and
Dragons are all about co-opera-
tion, storytelling, and overcoming
challenges using means of imagi-
nationthat areimpossibleto repli-
cate in video games. In the game,
players come forth to challenges
set out by the Dungeon Master
(DM), whoactsasasort of referee
as opposed to a protagonist. The
DM role is incredibly important
and many folks, including myself,
put alot of thought andeffort into
buildingtheworldsfor our players

I found my entry into the RPG
world very recently with a former
roommate of mine after watching
the aforementioned Community
episode. WeheadedtoLA Mood, a

want to create detailed characters
in an immersive world. Currently,
Pathfinder is a budding RPG sys-
temright now as it takes the ele-
ments of previous D&D systems
and tweaks it slightly to offer a
detailed and well balanced experi-
ence. Having said this, I also
believe that getting more players
into these hobbies might require
somesort of similaritytocomputer

of the series have been craving

but technologically impossible for
Nintendo to give its fans with the
handheld systems that they
released. To make such a drastic
change after so many years could
have been a risky move for the
company to make, as thefailureto
do it properly could, as with any
long-standing series, see the mass
alienation of the people who have
supportedit for solong.
After aweekonthestreets, long-

thatthereleaseof Pokmon X andY

selling 5.5 million copies on the

Perhapsof theutmostimportanceis
that thegames world and its char-

gamers with a level of immersion
into the world they are exploring
that previoustitleshavenever been

expressive characters that would
not look out of place in the 90s

Going beyond the surface, the

As for theolder gamers in thefan

The Pokmon series has never

at best the fifth most offensive
comment directed at you today.
Von Black has a666 mark on her
backside, andthejoiningof herself
andDr. Sataninunholymatrimony
will cause Satans powers to
increase dramatically and enable
himtotakeover theworld.
El Superbeasto is joined in this
all important quest by his eye-
patch-wearing sister, secret agent
Susie-X. Susie brings along her
personal servant Murray The
Robot, who is more interested in
inserting his input device into
Susiethaninsavingtheworld.
The movie features plenty of
laughs and chills along the way,
but it also contains a bare assload
of nudity. DonaldDuckhasruffled
somefeathers by waddlingaround
pantless for decades, but this film
takes it to a whole new level. I
havent seen so many cartoonish
exposed nipples since Tara Reid
quit partying.
I cannot recommend this film
enough. It has everything a truly
great film should have. A main
character who is a pro wrestler?
Check? A supportingrobot charac-
ter? Check. Gratuitous nudity?
Check. With this outing, Rob
Zombie has proven himself to be
the greatest horror director of all
time. Sorry, Alfred Hitchcock,
maybe if you had thought to
include an animated topless cat-
fight as akey sceneinoneof your
movies, Idbesingingyour praises
right now. Thehighest compliment
thatI canpaythisfilmisthatitfea-
tures aprominent character who is
agorillawhospeakswithaBritish
accent, and I didnt even mention
that until now. Normally that
would be the selling point of a
film, but in this case, its just
gravy.
Lastly, Ill alsoaddthat thisfilm
canactuallybequitetheeducation-
al tool for parents. If youhavebeen
struggling with talking to your
children about the birds and the
bees, just discreetly slip acopy of
this film into your childs
Halloween bag whileyou arepre-
tending to examine it for suspi-
cious-lookingcandiesat theendof
the night. Theyll spot the film,
watchit, andall thecartooncoitus
will teach them everything they
need to know about the male,
femaleandrobot sex organs.
Dear Nat,
Ive been having trouble seeing
the positive side of things lately.
Finding the silver lining in situa-
tions usually comes so naturally to
me, but between work, school and
hardly having time for a decent
social life, Ive just been feeling
bummed out. Im not depressed,
but Im definitely in a funk. How
can I start seeing the good in
things again?
Debbie Downer
Dear DebbieDowner,
A positiveoutlook onlifeisone
of the most important aspects
when trying to achieveahealthier
lifestyle. Whether youre faced
with a ton of work, relationship
problems, or shedding that stub-
born 5 lbs after Thanksgiving
weekend, seeingthegoodinevery
situation will maketacklingtough
daysabreeze.
Put things in perspective: Its
all about mind over matter! By
simply taking a step back from
your situation and analyzing it
from a third-party point-of-view,
youll be separating yourself and
your problems long enough to see
things more clearly. Oftentimes,
we immerse ourselves so heavily
in our own dilemmas that we end
updrowninginapool of self-pity.
Its up to you to throw yourself a
ring buoy and swimto dry land!
Furthermore, try the if and
then approach when trying to
find reassuring answers in your
hectic life. For example: If I fail
my examtomorrow, then Ill just
haveto study harder next time. If
this exam flunked me from my
course, then Ill have to face the
consequences and talk to a guid-
ance counsellor to get back on
track!
Take time for yourself: A lotof
peopleareguilty of puttingevery-
thing before themselves. Sure its
important to get our everyday to-
dolistsoutof theway, butstarving
yourself of anything else is going
to leave you feeling like youve
hardly accomplished anything. As
philosopher Aristotle once said:
Manis by natureasocial animal;
anindividual whoisunsocial natu-
rally and not accidentally is either
beneath our notice or more than
human. To cut to thechase, even
back in384BC, consideringyour-
self toobusy tosocializewas con-
sideredablasphemous trait. To an
extent, thesamecanbethought of
today, in that no one should con-
sider themselves too busy to stop
andsmell theroseseveryonceina
while.
Fake it till you make it: Even
on the days where you feel
absolutely exhausted, try to smile.
Studies have shown that once our
smiling muscles in our facearein
motion, positivesignalsaresent to
our brain to reinforce a feeling of
joythroughoutour body. Somesay
that, smiling can stimulate our
brains reward mechanisms in a
way that even chocolate, a well-
regarded pleasure-inducer, cannot
match. So skip the sweets and
simply smile.
Never rob your body of the
essentials: Sleep, exercise and
proper nutrition will never steer
you in thewrong direction. When
practiced regularly, all three will
contribute to you making more
rational decisions, lowering your
stress levels and feeling stronger
overall. And if life has taught me
anything, feeling and believing
that youre physical and mentally
fit will have you achieving more
than you might have originally
thought possible.
Toreiterate, alwaysputthingsin
perspective(remember theifand
then method), take time for
yourself, smile even when you
dont feel likeit, andremember to
never starve yourself of lifes
everyday essentials youll feel
happier innotime.

There is no question that we
have at our fingertips one of the
most revolutionary methods of
looking for employment the
Internet. Using the Internet is a
great waytoaccessadvertisedjobs
or to research employers. Make
sureyouareutilizingall theonline
resources you can, such as job
search sites, job search engines,
networking sites such as LinkedIn
andresumepostingsites.
When using search engines,
make sure you focus your job
searchby usingappropriatesearch
words. J obs in Canada is obvi-
ously too large to search, but
searching for a specific job title
and location wont be as over-
whelming.
Remember, if you want to
increase the chances of getting a
job, youneedtobalancesearching
for advertised jobs with an active
approachtonetworkinginthehid-
denjobmarket.
Here are some steps to get you
started:
Resume and covering letter:
Toconduct aneffectivejobsearch,
it isimperativeyouhavearelevant
resume and covering letter. Need
assistance? Checkout theinforma-
tion on how to write resumes and
covering letters distributed by
FanshawesCareer ServicesOffice
located in Room D1063. Ask to
haveyour resumecritiquedby the
Career Services Consultant
responsible for your program. Or,
if you are prepared to be over-
whelmed, goonlineandsearchfor
Resumes and Covering Letters
for sampleformats.
Research your chosen field:
Develop alist of employers either
by location or industry. Dont
overthinkyour search, for example
IT employers in London or
something similar to your career
search. Also, searchfor directories,
professional associations or publi-
cationsaspossiblesources.
Narrow down your list: Focus
on only 20 or so employers from
your listatonetime. Breakthetask
down into smaller ones by not
focusingontoomanyemployersat
once. Onceyouhaveyour list, start
finding out specific details about
the organization by visiting their
websites.
Access advertised jobs: There
are a number of sites that post
employment opportunities such as
indeed.ca or wowjobs.ca.
FanshaweCareer Servicespostsall
student and graduate jobs directly
to our job posting system, which
you can access through www.fan-
shaweonline.ca or www.fan-
shawec.ca/careerservices. Also
check out theRelatedJ obSearch
Websites link for many useful
links to other job posting sites,
directoriesandother resources.
Follow up: Keeptrack of whom
you sent your resume to. Contact
them by email or telephone
approximately four to seven days
later andinquireaboutthestatusof
your application. Offer to answer
any questions they may have and
express your interest in arranging
aninterview.
Network to access the hidden
job market: Approximately 80
per cent of jobs never get adver-
tised. Your first stepindeveloping
aprofessional network tohelpyou
in your job search is to gather
information and contacts. This
means developing a list of every-
one you know, including friends,
relatives, professors, former
employers, fellow classmates,
social groups, professional associ-
ations, etc. Call or email thesepeo-
pleandexplainthatyourenotask-
ingthemfor ajob, but rather gath-
ering information to learn more
about ajob. Becandidandask for
someadviceinyour work search.
Accessinginformationhasnever
been easier or more readily avail-
able and you should realize that
employers arealso pretty savvy in
their search for suitable employ-
ees. If youhaveaFacebookprofile
andyourejobsearching, youmay
have heard that you need to be
careful about the information you
post. Hiringmanagerscanandwill
check the web for information
about prospective candidates, and
Facebook is among the sites they
are checking. You do need to be
careful about what information
(andpictures) youmakepublic vs.
private; asureway to beeliminat-
ed from a job competition is to
have embarrassing pictures of
yourself out therefor all tosee.
Go ahead Google yourself.
After reviewing what you find,
answer this question: Would you
hirethisperson?

Your schedulemostlikelyrevolves
around these main aspects that
keepyouconstantly onthego.
It is easy to become over-
whelmedwithanendlessmountain
of things to do. Seeing a growing
to-do list can sometimes add to
anxiety and stress. Even though
you may be organized and on
track, youcanstill feel uneasy and
unrested.
What makes it so hard to focus
and concentrate effectively? This
may be because your mental
health, according to the Mental
HealthFoundationwebsiteasyour
emotional health or well-
being, is injeopardy andis being
overlooked. Our mental health
fluctuates naturally with our daily
lives, but can sometimes take
longer to readjust and recover
whenimpactedmorenegatively.
The problems that plague us
often take formas everyday wor-
ries and affect the way you think,
feel andbehave.
Are you feeling frazzled and
unfocused? Despite how urgent
your list of tasks may be, listen to
the hints your body is giving and
takethatstepback. Trysomeof the
following tips to help you recali-
brateinorder tomoveforward.
Do one thing at a time:
Multitasking is often valued in a
fast-pacedlifestyle, but it canactu-
ally create more stress and a lack
of attention to detail. Give your
mindarest andfocusononething
at a time. Concentrate on a main
task to achieve better quality and
let your mind rest from racing
everywhere.
Exercise: A common miscon-
ceptionisthatexercisingwill make
youmoretiredandcontributemore
stress. But physical activity releas-
esendorphinsinyour body, which
trigger positive emotions. Even if
it is simply a walk around the
neighbourhoodor your house, you
will feel moreenergizedandalert.
Treat yourself: It is easy to
wear yourself thin while keeping
busy. Do something fun and treat
yourself with a small reward for
your hardwork. Eat your favourite
food, takeabathor watchamovie.
Choose something that you enjoy
and might not normally have the
timeto do. Youcanalso usethese
rewards as motivationto complete
tasks.
Changeenvironments: Feeling
inarut? Switchupthescenery by
changing locations, especially
when studying. Give yourself a
new environment, the change in
atmospherewill helpyourecollect
andrefreshmentally.
Walk away: Thehardest thing
to do is to stop and walk away. If
you meet that mental block, take
thecueandmomentarilystopwhat
you are doing. Taking this break
may bethebest thingtoclear your
mind and approach it later with a
newperspective.
Amongst the flurry of activities
it is hard to schedule time in for
yourself. Me timeshouldbesep-
arate from any designated home-
work time and should give you
peaceof mind. Assuggestedbythe
Canadian Mental Health
Association, takethetimeto eval-
uatethedemandsof your everyday
lifeandtell yourself that it is okay
to stop and relax. Your mind can
be cluttered, so prevent yourself
from burning out by pressing a
mental pausebuttonandrejuvenate
your wellbeing.

Rival Watch: Eastern Conference
Last week, we looked at the
class of the West; the London
Knights biggest rivals heading
intothe2013/14season. Thisweek
its time to take a look at the
Easternconference. What makesit
alittleeasier for Londonandother
Western Conference teams is the
factthatEastmeetsWestjusttwice
aseason onceat homeandonce
away.
Heres looking at teams that
could make noise in the Eastern
Conference.
Kingston Frontenacs
Where do we begin with the
KingstonFrontenacs?
The Fronts were an OHL
anonymity for a number of sea-
sons, havingnot madetheplayoffs
or out of round one for over a
decade. Thisseason, theyreheavy
favourites to capture top seed in
theEast.
What changed? Max Domi.
The Frontenacs drafted Domi
back in2011withtheir first round
pick, despite the young Domi not
wanting to play in Kingston. The
end result the Frontenacs got a
mega package deal from the
Knights and thats whats reaping
therewardsthisseason.
The core of this teamis young,
all 1996-bornplayers, andeligible
tobedraftedintotheNHL in2014.
Sam Bennett and London native
Spencer Watson spearhead the
Frontenacs offense Bennett the
teams 2012 compensatory pick,
for failing to sign Domi and
Watson, their second round selec-
tion. Addedtothat aredefensemen
Dylan DiPerna and Roland
McKeown, all poised for massive
seasons, while only aged 17 or
younger.
That isnt whereKingstonstops,
though. They acquired Corey
Pawley fromLondon to add more
offensive potential. But their
biggest off-season coup was
acquiring Plymouths Matt
Mahalak in net. The overager
bringsawealthof OHL experience
tothecrease, tosteady theship.
Barrie Colts
The Barrie Colts might not be
the same teamthat faced London
in the2012 OHL finals. They are,
however, still asdangerous.
Mark Schiefele is no longer
around as hes now graduated to
the Winnipeg J ets. Additionally
Anthony Camara, goalie Mathias
Niederberger and captain Ryan
OConnor haveall movedon. The
Colts do have overagers Mitchell
Theoret andZachHall thisseason.
Hall wastopscorer lastseason, and
theresmuchexpectedfromhim.
But theres even more expected
from former Knight Andreas
Athanasiou. At 19 years of age,
hes likely entering his final OHL
season, and the Red Wings
prospect can and should featureat
thetopof theColtsscoringchart.
On the blueline, Barrie boasts
AaronEkblad, thesecondplayer to
begrantedexceptional statusinthe
OHL. Ekblad brings with him a
calm demeanor to the Colts, and
with his offensive and defensive
talents, itshardtoget anythingby
him.
Their biggest concernwill bein
net. Barrie lost overager Mathias
Niederberger after last season, and
his backup, 17 year old Alex
Fotinos will haveto carry theload
thisseason. Whether or nothell be
ableto, isleft tobeseen.
With the Memorial Cup being
hosted by the OHL, an additional
OHL team will get a berth next
May. Perhaps this time itll be
luckyfor Barrie, after comingever
socloselast season.
Sudbury Wolves
Theres something about the
Wolves that draws peopleto them
this season. Perhaps its the fact
that theyre pretty much the same
team as last year. In a generally
weaker Eastern Conference, the
Wolves are primed to stake their
claimfor topspot.
They returntheir topthreepoint
gettersfromlast season Matthew
Campagna, Nick Baptiste and
Nathan Pancel. Thats 172 points
from last season, and theres
expectation for more this season;
particularly fromBaptiste.
TheWolveswerebusyintheoff
season, addingConnor Crispfrom
the Erie Otters, perhaps hinting
that they haveMemorial Cupaspi-
rations. On defence, J immy
McDonnell was another acquisi-
tion in the Crisp trade and he,
along with former Knights fan
favourite Kevin Raine will stabi-
lizeayoung, eager defencecorps.
Veteran netminder Franky
Palazzese, who was acquiredfrom
Kitchener lastseason, will returnin
net as thethirdandfinal overager,
rounding out what looks like a
solidroster of players.
Perhaps with a couple of trades
in season, the Wolves, like the
BarrieColts, arepoised to makea
runfor theCup.
Other teams to keep an eye out
for:
North Bay Battalion: This will
be a season to remember for the
city of North Bay. The erstwhile
BramptonBattalionpackedupand
moved north in the off season,
bringing junior hockey back to
North Bay for the first time since
2002.
Bolstered by the return of their
captain Barclay Goodrow, the
Troopsarejoinedby 2014project-
ed first rounder Blake Clarke, as
well as Nick Paul and Mike
Amadioonoffence.
Goaltendingcouldbeashortfall,
as Matej Machovsky went back to
theCzechRepublic. That left J ake
Smithto takeover as thestarter in
only his second OHL season and
its to be seen how he fares with
theaddedworkload. They dohave
former Sudbury netminder
BrendanONeill for cover.
North Bay rejoices, though;
theyvegot theOHL back.
Oshawa Generals: Lost several
key players to the pro ranks,
includingDorchester nativeBoone
J enner. However, the Generals
wereboostedbythereturnof Scott
Laughton from the Philadelphia
Flyers.
Daniel Altshuller returnsingoal
bringing his experience along.
Their defensive corps is led by
J osh Brown, Chris Carlisle and
ColinSullentrop not asdominat-
ingasmanyother OHL franchises,
but still steadyenoughtomakelife
difficult for other OHL teams.

Kingston Frontenacs expect big things from 2014 NHL Draft eligible trio of (left), Sam Bennett, Roland
McKeown and Spencer Watson.
Not many peopleknowthis, but
Honda was the first among the
J apanesebrandstocomeupwitha
luxury division, namedAcura.
Thebrandgot off toagreat start
with their initial models, the
IntegraandtheLegend, beingvery
well receivedbythebuyingpublic.
Sadly, thebrandhasstruggledin
thelast decade. Whilesomemod-
els havedonewell, liketheMDX,
some have done quite poorly in
sales, likethelast generationRL.
For 2014, Acura has come up
with new versions of those vehi-
cles. Thequestionis, will theRLX
become much more successful
thantheRL itreplaces, andwill the
MDX continue to sell in huge
numbers?
This week, Imgoing to take a
look at boththesevehiclesandtell
youwhat thefuturemight holdfor
thesemodels.
Lets start with the RLX, the
flagshipmodel for thebrand, until
the new NSX arrives. The 2014
RLX is bigger and roomier than
the RL it replaces, it offers a six-
speedautomatic (theoldRL hada
five-speed auto) and while having
more power, the new model is
much more fuel efficient than the
one it replaces I averaged 9.6-
litres/100km.
However, whileit has gainedin
some areas, it has lost in others.
For instance, theSH-AWD (Super
HandlingAll Wheel Drive) system
is not currently offered on this
model, so theRLX is just afront-
wheel drivecar.
To compensate for the lack of
all-wheel drive, Acura has given
the RLX a systemit calls PAWS
(Precision All Wheel Steer).
PAWS allows the rear wheels to
turnafraction, whichletsthisvehi-
cleturn very sharply. This system
takes a little getting used to. On
off-ramps, whenthesystemwould
kick in, it would feel alittlenerv-
ous, and at first it caught me off
guard. While I can appreciate the
engineeringbehindit, I dont quite
think it is necessary for a car like
the RLX. Id rather have a clever
all-wheel drivesystemthan active
rear steer any day.
WhileI preferredthehandlingof
theoldRL over thenewRLX, I do
liketheextraponies onoffer here.
The 3.5-litre V6 motor produces
310hp, whichisplentyfor moving
this big car along. Along with its
new six-speed automatic, the
engine can spread its power more
evenlyacrosstherange. Whilethis
is no road rocket, it is sufficiently
fast enough for most of us. It cer-
tainly is much more efficient.
Thanks to its extragear andcylin-
der deactivation, theRLX canshut
off half itscylindersandjust cruise
on the highway, where it can
accomplish an incredible 6.4
litres/100km.
You get lots of room, front and
back, and you get plenty of toys,
which includes the new Krell
soundsystem, whichmakesthecar
feel likeaconcert hall. I likethat a
lot.
I alsolikethetechnologyoffered
in here, likeits lanedepartureand
laneassistfeature, alongwithblind
spot monitoring, forward collision
warning, andanactivecruisecon-
trol systemthat works all theway
down to afull stop. All thesefea-
tures take some of your stress
away. However, I somehow was
never quite comfortable in its dri-
vers seat. I felt the seatback just
didnt arch to thecurvatureof my
back and I was never comfortable
init. I askedafewother journalists
who haddrivenone, andthey did-
nt recall having this issue, but no
matter how I set my seat, I could
never get it quite right. Go for a
longenoughtest driveandtest the
seat out for yourself.
All inall, thenewRLX isafine
automobile. It might not be to
everyones taste, and personally I
dont think itll do much better
than the old RL, but if want the
most prestigious Honda product,
the RLX will do you just fine.
Pricesstart at $49,990.
Personally, Id rather spend my
hard-earnedonthenewMDX.
TheMDX hasbeenahit sinceit
was first launched back in 2001.
Whenthesecondgenerationmodel
cameout in 2006, it becameeven
more popular, and Acura kept
improving it with more and more
technology. In 2010, it got a six-
speed automatic, which made it
more frugal, and now for 2014,
thereisanewmodel.
Well, it isnt quiteall new. It is
more of a facelift than an all-new
model. Given how popular the
MDX has been, Acuradidnt want
tomesswiththeir winner.
So, while the shell and most of
the interior is quite similar, there
are a few changes. At first, it just
seems to have a new bumper and
headlights, but indetail, therearea
fewmorethings.
You now get keyless entry and
go, plusyouget lanedepartureand
lane keeping assist, along with
blindspot monitoringandforward
collisionwarning, andanadaptive
cruisecontrol systemthatworksall
thewaydowntozerokm/h. A spe-
cial featuretheMDX offers is the
surround view camera system,
which turns parking into a video
game(I lovethat).
It ispackedwithfeatures, andas
always, thereis plenty of roomfor
sevenpassengersinhere(although
theback-rowpassengersneedtobe
short). While I had an issue with
theseat intheRLX, I didnot have
suchanissuewiththeMDX. This
isacomfortableplacetobein.
Its not exactly fast. You get a
3.5-litre V6 motor that produces
290 hp. That is not a lot when
pullingnearly two tons, but it will
dothejobjust finefor most. What
I really likeis that Acuraretained
theSH-AWD systemin theMDX
and it really does help make this
huge SUV handle like a much
smaller vehicle. All-wheel drive
should make this quite capable in
the wet and in the snow also.
However, duetoitsweight andall-
wheel drive, I only managed 11.1
litres/100kmintheMDX, whichis
still quitegoodfor avehicleof its
size.
TheMDX continues to improve
and I do firmly believe that its
sales numbers will stay on the up
and up. With prices starting at
$49,990, this is quiteavehiclefor
themoney.

Could North American soccer
be, at least partially, playedduring
the winter? Thats what Major
LeagueSoccer iscontinuingtoask
as they move closer to a winter
schedule. Thegameonthissideof
thepondhasembracedmanyof the
European ideas of how football
should be run and supported. A
winter schedule would be another
oneof theseideas. But is it possi-
ble.
Letslookat thelimitations. The
rumoured changes to theschedule
wouldmeantheseasonwouldstart
in J uly or August (depending on
international competitions, likely),
take a four- to six-week break in
thedeadof winter, andthenfinish
theseasoninMayor J une. It does-
nt take a smart person to realize
playing soccer in Toronto in
February is a terrible idea, so I
wont dwell on that. What I will
argue against is the length of the
break.
In Europe, two- or three-week
breaks are common, to avoid
gamesbeingsnowedoutduringthe
colder parts of winter. Sure,
Europeswintersarent asharshas
NorthAmericas, but moreimpor-
tantly, they are much shorter. In
Europe, the temperature tends to
rise come February, with snow
very rarely fallinginMarch.
In North America (specifically
Canada and northern U.S. states),
snow is common to fall anywhere
fromDecember toMarch thatsa
bit longer than four- to six-weeks.
If MLS thinks taking aEuropean-
style six-week break will prevent
snowygames, theyareverywrong.
Also, why stop playing in the
summer? The North American
Soccer League, the league below
MLS, has implemented a split-
season schedule playing in the
spring, taking a couple weeks off
in the summer, then have another
half inthefall (thewinnersof each
season play eachother inafinal
at theendof theyear).
What good does that do? If the
leagueisntplayingduringsomeof
thenicestweather of theyear, what
about fans? Would casual
Montreal Impact fans come to a
match in J uly, or in February?
Youre losing money not playing
duringthesummer.
Finally, think about where your
players arecoming from. Thereis
no outdoor, competitive soccer
being played in North America
during the winter, so why would
your top leaguesuddenly change?
It will throw the system out of
whack, with developmental
leagues working at different times
thanthemainleague.
Besides, these smaller leagues
and teams cant switch over to a
winter schedule either, because
theycant affordthingslikeunder-
soil heatingandwhatnot.
Overall, switching the calendar
for whatever reason does more
harm than good to the game in
North America. There will be
fewer fans, more games cancelled
duetotheweather andlower qual-
ityonthefieldbecauseplayerswill
notbeusedtoplayinginthosecon-
ditions. Why change, and why
changenow?

Freeman bolts back to the Lightning
Freebird has landed. After join-
ing the London Lightning during
the teams first season two years
ago, Gabe Freeman took the
National Basketball League of
Canada by storm, eventually win-
ning the inaugural Most Valuable
Player award. After going to the
Philippines for a year, hes back
withtheLightning. Has thisrapid-
lychangingleaguepassedhimby?
Arguments that the league has
advanced a lot over the past year
arecertainly valid. WhenFreeman
played in the inaugural season of
theleague, hewas thirdinscoring
at 18.1 points per game. No other
players broke the 20 point per
game (ppg) barrier that season.
This season there were three:
Moncton MiracleDevin Sweetney
(24ppg), Saint J ohn Mill Rat
Anthony Anderson (21ppg) and
Summerside Storms Brandon
Robinson(20ppg). Perhapsthetop
three shooters dont represent
league scoring as a whole, but it
doesshowtherearesomevery tal-
ented players coming through as
star players. Freemans 2011/12
numbers wouldnt crack the top
fivethispast year.
But what sets Freeman apart on
hisstat lineishisvariety. Heaver-
aged just over 12 rebounds per
game(rpg) in2011/12, alongwith
18points per game. Thesesorts of
double-doublenumbersaresorare
that he was the only one in the
NBLC to end the season with a
double-double(twopointper game
values being over 10, so double
digits).
Now, thesmall forwardposition
was takenlast year by players like
J ermaine Blackburn and J eremy
Williams, twopiecesFreemanmay
need to cover. Blackburn was
dropped late last season due to
behaviour problems, andWilliams
was simply not invited back to
camp. Blackburn was one of the
lesser pieces of the puzzle for the
Lightning last year, rarely putting
up big games. Hewas very effec-
tiveon thefreethrow line, notch-
ing a percentage of .875 (not an
important stat, but theonlytotal he
seemed to put decent numbers up
in). Williamswasabigguy, stand-
ingat 6ft. 7in., but was unableto
ever influence the game on the
boards, holdinganaverageof 4rpg
throughhistimethere. Onpaper, it
seems as if Freeman will have no
trouble replacing both Williams
andBlackburn.
But in theend, it boils down to
efficiency. Theefficiency stat is a
number-crunchers best friend,
becauseit showshoweffectivethe
player is in onesimplenumber. It
adds things like points, assists,
rebounds and steals, but takes
away values like turnovers and
missedfieldgoals. Imagineif Brad
Pitt and J onah Hill used a single
number to evaluate players in the
movie Moneyball. This is the stat
of Hollywood. Freeman had an
Efficiency number of 22.9back in
2011/12 thebest intheNBLC by
two percentage points. A 22 is a
massive number in Eff, with very
good games being graded in the
high 20s. Freeman has shown he
can contribute to several different
parts of the game at a high level,
and perhaps that all-around play
will keephimonthecourt all sea-
sonlong.
Freeman is a favourite to make
theteamthisyear andholdontoa
starters spot. An old crowd
favourite should return to glory,
when his Lightning take the court
at the Budweiser Gardens on
November 2.
Marty Thompson is the play-by-
play voice of the London Lightning
for their livestream,
SportsLive24.net. This is just one
of a four part set, previewing the
upcoming season.
