Dr. Steel will discuss the early twentieth-century history of travel and tourism in light of colonial New Zealands cultural and political history. That history includes changes in New Zealands relationship with its Pacific neighbors as a result of Americas push into the region with the Matson Steam Navigation Company. During the 1920s and 1930s, Suva and Auckland became part of Matsons trans-Pacific passenger routes, creating new competition with the Union Company of New Zealand and bringing significant commercial and political changes to the region.
