Reflections on interpreting student assessment data PM benchmark testing, Mel showed me how to test a student using this system

m and explained how the system worked. As many students were scoring low in their retelling skills, this was an area that was focused on during class time. To get the students to become more aware of retelling, the strategies involved and how important the skill was. This was achieved by getting the students to participate in a guided reading group where they read a book that was slightly below their reading level, this allows the student to focus on the sentence or content of the page rather than the individual words. They read the book individually first and then they discussed as a group what the book was about. Using the prompts of setting, characters, complication and solution, then what was in the beginning the middle and the end of the book. It really got the students focusing on what the book was about as a whole and not just reading the words individually. So testing works well in these types of ways, to look at where the student is at, interpret the assessment data and then act accordingly to improve weak areas.
