in seinen Reichen" was probably composed during the year In Bach's autograph the score is inscribed "Oratorium auf HimmelThe full fahrt", and hence it is sometimes called the Ascension Oratorio. score includes three Trumpets, two Flutes, two Oboes, Strings, Organ, and Cembalo, with Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass soli, and Chorus. The text, probably arranged and paraphrased by Picander, was in part taken from the gospels according to St. Mark and St. Luke and from the Acts of the Apostles. As in the Passions, the narration of the Ascensiontide story is assigned to the Tenor. An orchestral introduction in the characteristically Bach "festival" manner is followed by a powerful and animated chorus. The somewhat faulty declamation of the second section suggests that this piece may have been originally composed for some secular occasion. However, this ex-
tensively developed chorus may be ranked among the finest, displaying Bach's genius in design. The use of two flutes in the Bass and Contralto recitatives is exceedingly efifective, emphasizing the reflective mood of the text. The aria for Contralto is deeply moving, with its recurring, descendin^^ Bach later used some ot figure of both voice and violin as a motif of grief. As Albert Schweitzer this material in the Agnus Dei of the Mass in B minor. has rightly expressed it, the Agnus Dei is not "a mere transfer, but a rearrangement; and it is more correct to speak of its being suggested by th" original rather than borrowed from it." The first part of the cantata closes with a chorale melody frequently used by Bach, "Ermuntre dich, mein schwacher Geist", with an approThe text of the chorale is the fourth stanza priately effective harmonization. of Johann Rist's Ascension hymn, "Du Lebensfrst, Herr Jesu Christ". The construction of the aria for Soprano is somewhat unusual, in that it is designed for a quartet without a true bass, the vocal part being given added importance only by the words. C. H. H. Parry says: "It carries the composer's methods of applying polyphonic counterpoint in solo movements In this edition the Cembalo to the very highest pitch of artistic intensity." part has been intentionally omitted so as to define more clearly the fore going design. The final movement is in the nature of a chorale-prelude or fantasia. It resembles the first chorus in spirit and is throughout firmly supported by the quarter-notes of the Cellos and Double Bass.
