l Development, Part 1 Kenneth H. Phillips 2004 Discussion What are the five basic areas of vocal instruction in which the choral music educator must be a competent instructor? These five basic areas are respiration, phonation, resonant tone production, diction, and expression. A Choral Music Educator must be accomplished in all of these areas to successfully instructor learners. There are many texts available that go into extensive detail on these areas. Choral student should also have access to resources that describe these five areas and ways into which they can improve. Without a thorough knowledge of these areas a Choral Music Educator cannot hope to appropriate teach their students. These five basic areas can be divided and cover nearly if not every aspect of singing. If even one of these areas is lacking in choral classroom the result choir will not be as strong as groups who experience each of these areas everyday and they are a focus even when learning repertoire. I believe it is very important to touch on each of these five elements in every class.
