Physics 513 Homework Assignment 6 due Wednesday, 9 Nov. 2011 1. Fixed potential on cylinder. Jackson 3.9. 2.

Specic potential on cylinder. Jackson 3.10. 3. Bessels, Bessels, and more Bessels. Jackson 3.16 (a,b), and the rst equation of part (c). The instructions for (a) should read that you are proving (3.108), as the generalization of (3.95) not that you are generalizing (3.108). (Hints: to show that you have a delta function, you must show that the expression vanishes if the arguments of the delta function are dierent, and that the appropriate integral over all space still gives 1. To do the rst part, use the Bessel D.E. on one of the J , multiply by the other J , and integrate. Do the same thing with the Bessels switched, and then subtract the two, as is done for a dierent interval on pages 114-115. For the second part, you may nd the integral

to be useful.) Extra credit for nishing part (c), and for (d). 4. Green functions in cylindrical coordinates. Jackson 3.23: derive at least one of the rst two expansions, and the third expansion (which is easiest!). Extra credit for deriving all three.
