NOTE ON CANTATA
Jubilate, or the third
No. 146
Triibsal" was composed for Sontag after Easter. Spitta dates the work 1740. Johannes Schreyer questions its authenticity, and suggests the hand of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. copy of the score has been found to be in the handwriting of one J. Hering, a pupil of C. P. E. Bach. As to the identity of the librettist, no specific information is The second movement is based on Acts 14:22, and the available. sixth movement on Romans 8:18. The full score includes Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass soli, four-part Chorus, Flute, two Oboes, two Oboi d'amore, Taille, Strings, and Organ. This cantata would seem to be one of several written at the time when the St. Thomas School was being renovated, and a small positive organ was moved into the church, where it was used as an obbligato instrument for playing such solo parts as are found
in this
Sinfonia is the first movement of the D minor Concerto for Clavier and Orchestra, which also introduces Cantata No. 188. Here the organ is indicated as the solo instrument. The second movement is founded on the Adagio of the concerto mentioned above. Three elements unite to form this remarkable chorus: a ground bass, a freely moving solo part, and an independent chorus superimposed. This unique device produces a work of consummate artistry and craftsmanship. The two arias for Alto and Soprano are exceedingly colorful, and Bach's pictorialization adds immeasurably to the settings. In the first, he uses a violin in "soaring heaven-borne" arpeggios and rhythmic patterns, and, in the second, the sighing tones of flutes and oboes. The recitative that separates them is worthy of a place among those to be found in the larger works. The text is accompanied by the most subtle harmonies, played, appropriately, by the strings in the orchestra. The duet for Tenor and Bass might well be considered as rounding out the Concerto in this cantata. A brighter aspect, introduced by the preceding Tenor recitative, appears in the change of key from D minor to F major. The duet is a vigorous piece of music; and, like many other of Bach's compositions, it has the strong rhythmic patterns of the dance. The words that Bach intended for the final chorale are not given in the manuscript or in the Bachgesellschaft edition. The tune (widely known from its use in Cantata 147) is by Johann Schop. The present edition supplies the second stanza of Johann Rist's hymn "Werde munter, mein Gemiithe", with which the melody first appeared.
