Cosmetics:
The U.S. FDA which regulates cosmetics in the
United States defines cosmetics as:

“Intended to be applied to the human body


for cleansing, beautifying, promoting attractiveness,
or altering the appearance without affecting the
body's structure or functions.”

Cosmetics are substances used to enhance or protect


the appearance or odor of the human body
This broad field includes:
Skin care creams and lotions
Powders
Perfumes
Lipsticks and Lip-gloss
Fingernail and toenail polishes
Eye and facial make-up
Permanent waves
Hair colors , hair sprays and gels
Shampoos and other hair care products
Bubble baths and bath oils
Deodorants
Criticism of cosmetics:

This criticism has come from various sources like:

Feminists

Animal rights activists

Authors

Public interest groups


Ingredients and Diseases:
Paraben can cause skin irritation and contact dermatitis
in individuals

Prolonged use of makeup has also been linked to


thinning eyelashes

Synthetic fragrances are widely used in consumer


products. Studies concluded from patch testing show
synthetic fragrances are made of many
ingredients which cause allergic reactions

SLS ( Sodium Laureal Sulphate) causes a number of skin


issues including dermatitis

How should we be careful:
Sunscreen UVB generally
Should be UVA as well as UVB
No fragrance
