Introduction
The major research interests of the Structural Reliability and Disaster Risk Lab lie on structural reliability, network reliability, disaster risk assessment, and riskbased structural design and maintenance. We investigate the performance of structures and lifeline networks under service loads and/or disasters using probabilistic approaches, for design, maintenance, and disaster management.

Finite Element Method/Analysis y

Finite element analysis (FEA), also called the finite element method (FEM) i (FEM), is a method th d f for numerical i l solution l ti of f field fi ld problems. bl It includes the use of mesh generation techniques for dividing a complex problem into small elements, as well as the use of FEM algorithms. Several modern FEM packages (e.g., ABAQUS and ANSYS) include specific ifi components t such h as th thermal, l electromagnetic, l t ti fl fluid, id and d structural working environments.

FEM: The big gp picture

For a general structural analysis problem,

we want to know the states (displacement, strains, stresses, etc ) throughout the structure etc.) structure.
