SIMPLE PAST

The simple past expresses an action in the past taking place once, never, several times. It can also be used for actions taking place one after another or in the middle of another action.

PAST SIMPLE FORM:

AFFIRMATIVE: Subject + verb + complement I ate a lot chocolate. NEGATIVE: Subject + did + not + verb + complement He did not (didnt) learn french.

INTERROGATIVE: Did + subject + verb + complement Did you buy the car?

EXCEPTIONS IN SPELLING WHEN ADDING ED:


O For irregular verbs, use the past form. (was, went,

ran, broke, etc.)


O For regular verbs:
O After a final e only add d. (loved, asked, used, etc.) O Final consonant after a short, stressed vowel or / as final

consonant after a vowel is doubled. (admitted, travelled, etc.)


O Final y after a consonant, becomes i. (hurried, studied)

USE OF SIMPLE PAST

Actions in the past taking place once, never or several times: He visited his parents every weekend.
Actions in the past taking place one after the other: He came in, took off his coat and sat down. Actions in the past taking place in the middle of another action: When I was having breakfast, the phone suddenly rang. If sentences type II (If I talked, ): If I had a lot of money, I would share it with you.
