Colombian Government

Background
Colombia gained its independence from Spain on July 20, 1810. However, they werent able to right a constitution until July 5, 1991 because of the countries internal problems. They have a republic government with the executive branch dominating the government structure.

Divisions
The Republic of Colombia is broken up into 32 departments and 1 capitol district. These 32 departments are a lot like states and the capitol district is a lot like Washington DC in the United States. The capitol of Colombia is Bogota. This is where the president resides and same with his government branches.

Election Process
President and Vice President are elected by popular vote to a four-year term that is eligible for a second term. The elections take place every May and the next on is set for May 2014.

President
Juan Manuel Santos Calderon is the current President of Colombia. He was elected with his Vice President, Angelino Garzon, in August of 2010. This coming May they will be facing another election that could either elect them to another term or the people could choose another leader.
